Ok, I am no expert but I have never heard of or seen an outlet in the top of a counter top. I can't even begin to say all the dangers this poses. Maybe your contractor needs to go to someone over this inspector, a supervisor or maybe even go to the city/county to re-address this. It may be something you have to fight for but it will be worth it in the long run. When we built a family room and we had the electrical inspection, one inspector told us one thing about the placement of a wall plug and we made the change, then after it was done a different inspector came out and said it was wrong and that we had to change it again, of course at our expense. We fought it and won and were able to keep it where the first inspector told us it had to be. It was a hassle and did delay us a bit but it was worth it. Good luck.

Did the inspector say that it had to be right in to the granite or just some where on the peninsula? I could see them treating the peninsula as a wall and saying that you needed an outlet along the side somewhere but not on top.

Ask the inspector if they would accept one along the side? If they say no then I would definitely go right to the township like Sharon suggested.

I'm guessing he means on the peninsula…ours has an outlet on the end. In reality, they are very convenient for plugging in cellphones on a daily basis and for the mixer when it's being used.

Good luck ! Just keep in mind that township code requirements don't always make sense. In my township we have to pay a $15 fee to replace a baluster in a stair rail. ???
