IMHO, daybeds are one of those design tricks: you'd think that they would be a great idea but they're just not.

Unless you don't ever really have to sit on them and they're only being used as a bed. Then they're just fine.

They're just too deep to sit on comfortably. If you put tons of pillows to fill in the space so that there's actually a back rest of some sort, then when it's time to use the bed, you have to figure out what to do with those 600 pillows.

To me, a daybeds doesn't cut it. Looks great but impractical.

We also have lots of tall people in our family hence not a single bed has a footboard.

I would like to incorporate the idea into our home office for an extra guest room . I really wondered if it would work.

Love the day bed - great spot to sit and read a book and then when company comes wow a great space for them to sleep - double duty!

Daybeds are great to curl up in and read a good book and it makes a girl's room look a lot better than just a bedroom.

HI -- I have a white wicker daybed - former owner paid 1200. for it and now my 6 year old grand son claimed it for his room .First had it in a guest room for my elderly Mother -and we all love it

Just what I need for guest bedroom

Love the daybed with pop-up trundle for the kid's guest room. It's always good for 2 kids, I can rope them together and put on king size sheets for 2 grownups, and it's a pretty comfy sleep. I agree that daybeds aren't very good sofas -- they're better if you make them up as beds and use them as beds, but kids love to lounge on them. The niece and nephew like to keep the trundle near the floor when they visit -- much more comfy than sleeping on the floor.

I have a daybed in my guest room. It's perfect for guest pops open into a double bed then closes up when they are gone. My dog loves it too. Lays on it for hours looking out the window.

We have one in my granddaughter's room -- it is great. You can sit and read and look out the window during the day and sleep at night. It doesn't take up as much room as a bed and a chair.

Perfect spot to curl up with a book. Or restful sleeping spot for a guest

I lived with one in a small and weirdly laid out studio/efficiency for a couple of years. I splurged for the trundle and yes I did occasionally have friends stop and stay over so the trundle was useful. I found I made two 'cornerfuls' of pillows and had a few bolsters I sewed for plopping along the back if I was having company; else just one other person could park with the other pile in the corner. Just buy decent mattresses! One move the movers beat it up and lost the mattresses (we had four beds if you count the trundle and the movers lost one whole crate, with all the mattresses) and it was never set up again, I gave to some friends who were just starting out and had no furniture. It was great to curl up on, and my cats and I spent many an hour doing 'togetherness' on it; I could watch TV and be as slothful as I wanted. As a straightforward couch, they stink. As a 'surface to relax on' they are great. As a 'multiuse bed' they are great.

we have one on our sunroom. great for sleeping, reading a book. It has 2 large drawers so lots of storage too. we had it made by a local craftsman, so it was good for the local economy to boot.

Love mine, although I admit it's never been slept on! I use it in my spare 'large closet' room as a place to sit while I try on clothes. I too had mine custom made by a local, so have two huge storage drawers in the trundle area. Love, love love!

Love this look. But unless you are a child or a short adult would not work for sleeping.

A great many daybeds are 80" long. That should be sufficient for most adults.

I voted "yes" because I think they serve a good function in a spare room. However, I've bought two of them and send them each back because they were just not comfortable to sit on. I needed the daybed to be both a sofa in a TV room and a bed for guests. I ended up scrapping the TV room idea and turned the spare room into a true guest room with a full bed. I put the TV in the never-used living room. Now every room in my tiny house is well used. Still like the idea of the daybed - just not for me.

I voted "Neutral". I've never owned one, but I guess it will serve well in a guest room which I don't have one.

I don't love them, but a daybed is the best solution I've been able to come up with for the Den here, since it needs to function as an office area/TV room/guest room, and it's not big enough for a sleeper sofa. (I dislike futons more than I dislike daybeds.) Once I find one I like (or have it made) I plan to do something to make a sort of bolster to go along the back to make it more comfortable for TV watching activities. Luckily most folks in the house are loungers rather than sitters so it should be okay. There is room also for a smallish comfortable chair, so that will provide a seating option for anyone who isn't comfortable on the daybed, too, and do double-duty giving a second seat at the desk.

Daybeds, called punee in Hawaii, are staples in a Hawaiian home, good for afternoon naps, extra guests and reading. I plan to put one on my lanai for seating, reading, and extra guests. I am considering hanging it from the rafters to have a swinging bed.

The best one I've seen was in a friend's dorm room at some German university. Attached to the wall over about 1/3 of the bed was a long storage cubby with its door on a slant, so that pillows against it made the whole thing into a decent sofa. To sleep on it, you had to pull the bed out that extra foot. The bedding was stored in the cubby. Quite brilliant, IMO.

OMG, these are SO uncomfortable to sit on! I put one in my family room thinking it was a great place for an extra bed if I needed one and a comfy place to watch tv from I really never used it as a bed until my marriage fell apart. then I slept on it every night until my ex could leave. Sitting on it is extremely uncomfortable. I used the trundle underneath for storage, and really, that's the only part of it I like. Looking forward to replacing it.

When we were first married (many years ago) we lived in a tiny efficiency apartment. We had a trundle bed that served as our couch during the day and had a pull out/pop up trundle that came out at night. We secured the two beds together with C-clamps. Worked great for us for several years. Eventually, we moved it to our cabin and again it was a great space saver

@patatas - That's a genius idea. I wonder if we could do that, but have the cubby on some sort of slide instead so it could be slid up the wall out of the way to make room for sleeping, since I'm not sure if there'd be enough room to pull the bed out enough...

I just think they're a pain in the you-know-what to remake.

Love daybeds! My dad was an upholsterer, so he made me one with sofa arms and huge back cushions filled with down and feather, making it very comfortable to sit on during the day, and Id just remove them when Id sleep.

If you have the space, I think for the right room and person it can be a great touch to a home!

We have a white daybed w/trundle in our large Sunroom. I have tons of pillows on it and it's the perfect place to curl up and read a book, especially on a stormy day! Oh, and of course the Grandkids absolutely love sleeping there too. One piece of advice though, don't buy a daybed for extra seating ~ doesn't work because of the depth. But if there are children in your family, that's where they'll be sitting. (Holds a ton of them!)

I just bought one and I am excited to have extra sleeping for my grandkids or whoever comes for a sleepover. Great for a smaller room/ office, den. I love using lots of pillows and comfy comforters.

used mine instead of a sofa in my apt for 2 years when the sofa fell apart and I couldn't afford to replace it. not ideally comfortable (and I am short legged) but we all survived.

Not a napper but it's a nice place to relax for a little siesta.

I must be missing some knowhow that you all seem to have, but how on earth does one make the bed other than crawling all over it?

Other than that they seem great for people who can still sit crosslegged and then can still uncross and function afterwards :).... That would be me up until age fifty, not now.

I would have to choose a lounging position that would work to get me all the way to the mortician's.....

Both lovely and functional, and goes well with the decor! I myself have kept a daybed in my family room for years. Its rose dream design blends well with my overall decor, and it also doubles as a guest bed.

I had a daybed in my bedroom as a teen, and I wish I still had it! I loved that bed. I liked the look and it was great for someone who spends a lot of time in their room reading, listening to music, etc....

Why wouldn't regular full sized bedding work?

So assuming that you get an extra-long twin (80) size, arent' normal twin mattresses about 44" wide - a little more than the standard depth of an extra deep sofa (like Crate an Barrel "Lounge II"). So assuming you make a fairly thick bolster or pile a bunch of pillow behind, why are they uncomfortable to sit on?
