I have the HZ54 fireplace from Regency. If this is truly the same fireplace there is NO WAY you can put a tv above it. It gets hot enough that if you touch it you would burn yourself. You even have to use metal framing in the wall so the wall doesn't burn. Very hot.

I agree with your concern, @sehshirl, but the installation manual for the fireplace allows a combustible mantel only 20" above the fireplace opening (at the bottom of the s.s. trim). I'm not saying a TV SHOULD go there, but the installation manual allows for the possibility. The TV manufacturer may feel differently.
One advantage of direct vent fireplaces like this is that they produce primarily RADIANT heat, which projects out into the room and away from the wall, instead of rising like convective heat.

How would one go about framing an existing gas fireplace like this. Is there anyone that manufactures just the frame and possibly glass doors for it?

@prospera, there are somethings you can do to update an existing fireplace, but you have to make sure you don't do anything that will create a possible fire hazard.

We have fabricated a stainless steel surround for another project that I think came out looking very nice (see below). We have also custom built a surround using non-combustible cement board (second photo).

Do you have a photo that you can post in a new discussion? The make and model of the existing gas fireplace would be very helpful as well, because I can look up the clearances and requirements of that particular model if I have that information.
