The International residential code is what guides these things. You should check with your local code enforcement department if you have one. I believe the minimum IRC space is 36 inches. You also have to consider if you will be able to remove and/or open all cabinets and appliances once the Island is constructed.

I was thinking of a narrow table, the perfect one would be made of an old distressed wood. I am on the lookout for the right piece.

Ideally you would want a minimum of 36inches either side - but wider if possible, especially in front of a DW and FF ?!? So doesn't leave much room for an island - a movable trolly, like already suggested seems a more useful addition !

Sorry not enough room. 36" is way to narrow between island and counters I have 48" and it just works. Some rooms just don't accomadate an island and when you try to make it work in just ends up being in the way instead of a help.
