Paint this armoire?

I have this old armoire that is visually too heavy for my spaces and too outdated. I've been thinking of painting it. My design style is "transitional". What would you do with this to update it? Ive also thought of taking the door off and putting shelves in it. Thanks.

Appraisals vary by locale, so it is best to check value locally. Craigslist, your local freepress, and classifieds are good places to post photos - ebay is small use on large items. Best of luck - charming piece!

Oops, here's the picture. I'm not sure where to use it? It's in the family room now but must be moved

I can't see the whole pic on my iPad, but of what I can see, I would be painting that in a minute! :)

But as abbyjean asked, do you know where you would be using this? I think that might determine what you would do to it.

No! Don't paint it! It's a lovely antique with a nice wood veneer. What is the circle in the center? I'm sure this was originally intended as a (1930's or 40's?) bedroom wardrobe. If it doesn't suit your current home & style, perhaps sell it or consign it? There is nothing wrong with it's finish. Painting it will alter it's fundamental beauty, the dark waves in the veneer etc. My two cents!

The piece, if in good structural shape, is best left alone. Painting will not make it smaller, but can easily make it shabbier. Consider selling it to someone who can utilize it in a period appropriate space. In addition,If this is cedar lined, mention it in your ad.

Thank you all for the feedback. I was worried about "ruining" it with paint. It is very old.

The center is a round medallion pull.

Maybe I will try to sell it since I really don't have a use for it and don't love it. Maybe someone else will.

It is a little damaged. At one point the door was tapped shut and the finish has peeled off a bit and the bottom floor panel got cracked during a move.

Any recommendation on how to price it? What do you think it's worth?

I agree heartily. If you don't love it, there are a lot of people who would. Get it appraised, and sell on one of countless sites; craigslist or ebay could get you what the value of that beautiful piece is really worth. They can also give you an idea what 1930's large furniture pieces go for. Paint it, and it's worthless.

Once you've sold it, you'll then have the cash to get something you love.

Even if it was left to you by your grandma, I'm sure she'd rather it go to someone who loves it, rather than tolerates it. We all have our individual taste. I'm not a big fan of that style, but I know people who'd haul that armoire 250 miles on top of a compact car, they'd love it so much.
