What is this thing hanging from the gutter? We just bought a Craftsman so I'm looking at pics to get ideas and I've seen quite a few of these things that look like upside down cowbells. Having just moved to the Midwest from Virginia, I have never seen these before. Thank you

    Congratulations on your Craftsman! These rain chains were purchased from rainchains.com. They make a soothing sound when it is raining. Great for sitting on the porch during a rain shower! I have the chains draining into what looks like a gravel pit but under the gravel is a collector box that takes the water to the street curb along with the other downspouts on the house.

      They're rain chains. Very popular in Japan, but many artisans carry them in the states. You'll often see them above a rain barrel. They serve as an alternative to a downspout. Just as effective, but much prettier! Here's a link to a video of rain chains at work:

      I wonder how well they work in freezing conditions? I love them but winter and spring they might freeze up?

      I am in Ohio and the rain chains in the picture freeze up all the time in the winter. It is actually pretty neat to see them turn into columns of ice. They have been up for 8 years and I have never had a problem with them.
