I don't think it's too regal. It just might be neutral if you decorate the rest of the room in the appropriate style. You can go either traditional, re-in forcing the theme of the curtains, or you can go more contemporary, leaving the curtain style as an eclectic accessory. It all depends on where you want to go with the rest of the decor.

You have a lovely room with plenty natural light, beautiful floors, nice furnishings and an unexpected alcove - very sweet. It us a little formal, try changing the drapes to straight panels, pull the sofas closer. All brides are beautiful, but their portraits work better in a private space, such as, a bedroom or hall. That darling alcove ( I would love to have ) is the perfect spot for a table and two chairs, or built in seating. Bring in another color through paint and cushions. This is where I turn it over to our Houzzer friends who always come up with the right solution.

Quite a lovely space, although it does seem a bit austere. It seems that the most successful traditional rooms have layered pattern, textures, a bit more color and a few more "bits". The room may seem more comfortable with some additions, without going too casual or altering the draperies. I think this room would benefit from a beautiful classic large print wallpaper. It seems there is an adjacent room with a blue/gray in it. Perhaps you could find a paper with that same tone, with the print in the color of the draperies plus a neutral. A game table in the alcove with a couple of chairs with upholstered seats, or a reading nook with a single chair and small table....a floorstanding globe at the small wall with the dark framed photo on it...bring the relationship of the sofas closer together, so the coffee table is reachable, or try an "L" if room permits, using the round table in the corner of the "L". A pretty throw (coral?) somewhere in there with a few more books and a small plant on the coffee table may make it feel more approachable. :)

My eye keeps returning to the coffee table, which doesn't seem to be the right scale. You might consider a more substantial coffee table and perhaps additional side tables, also on a slightly larger scale. Perhaps adding a side chair or two (in another pattern or color) would make the conversation area more inviting. The lamps, too, seem a bit small for the room's scale. I agree with the comments about family photos. The room seems to ask for oil paintings. Etsy is a great source for plein aire oil paintings.

Your curtains were not cheap; therefore, only replace them if you do not like traditional decor.

A quick, inexpensive fix would be to paint your walls. Don't be afraid to go a little darker than the curtains as you have lots of light coming into the room. A darker color may make your curtains less noticeable. I like your rug....possibly a wall color from there?

A nice wallpaper would be another solution.

One thing about traditional furniture, it's not a fad.

It is a lovely room and I generally like your furniture. I would change your coffee table for a glass topped, oval one with a metal frame, just to make it a bit more trendy. I agree to put the bridal photo elsewhere in the house. Your curtains are fine but I would have the curtains altered by a tailor, as someone else suggested so they are side panels, rather than having the swag thing hanging down in the middle of the window. You need to add some color to the room, whether that is painting the walls, cushions or you could add some pot plants

Oh my gosh! I have almost this same room, alcove and all, and nearly identical drapes in.....wait for it.....PINK! (Came with the house and yes, I know they're costly custom drapes is why they're still there). I have given many hours of thought to other window treatments, especially in the turret area (as I called it). I sure hope the readers post some pictures of other ideas.

Hi Adrienne. I'm not entirely sure whether this is your room, or an inspiration picture you like. (The photograph looks professional -- so congrats if you took it!) I'd like to know whether you want to use this as a formal entertainment room, or more of a room that the family can live in comfortably. You can certainly have the latter with formal, traditional decor, but the changes one might make to this room could be influenced by the purpose of the room.

The curtains are US Federal , English Regency, French Empire in style. If some pieces from those styles were introduced the curtains would look fine. Look at the US Whitehouse public reception rooms for inspiration. Their website is amazing!

I am not a decorator, but I think you could go more of a Pottery Barn look. I like your sofas and your rug and even your coffee table. If your drapes were a different color you could probably just remove the swag part and keep the panels. My suggestion would be to paint your walls maybe BM Revere Pewter or Sherwin Williams Canvas Tan. Get throw pillows to go with your beautiful rug and maybe some simple linen drapes. That is where I would start if you are interested in changing things up.

When I look at this room I see that no one ever uses this space. Paint color on the walls is the least of the problems at this point. ALL of the furniture is under scale for the room size. There is too little of it and what is there looks way too skimpy and low end for the grand style this is supposed to project. The only things I would possible keep is the rug and the 2 sofas. Everything else would have to go. To me it is a blank slate from which to start over, and this requires the owners participation. Is this post real?? Usually by now the "poster" has chimed into the conversation, at least with a comment.

I would blend in more organic things to bring it down to earth while keeping a traditional feel. I would first remove the swags & jabots & leave the panels & add bamboo blinds underneath. I would have the turret style alcove made into a window seat with sumptuous pillows with a small chandalier over it. The tables are outdated & need replaced, perhaps a dark bronze metal with glass tops, a tufted leather ottoman as cocktail table, a plum velvet upholstered antique chair on the front door side of the sofa on the left. Paint your trim all one shade of white & half pillars to match. The ceiling needs to NOT be white...I would paint it a tint of the wall color (which should be darker). The frames & ceiling partition of the pillars should be darker than the walls. I would take the removed swag to Sherwin Williams & have a color consultant there guide you. I see your pop color as plum, if that's what I'm seeing in your rug. So plum should replace the pillows that match your sofa for down pillows. Stacked baskets next to the sofa on the right, the side closest to your dining room. New lamps (see link for Pottery Barn suggestion...notice the great texture!!! Texture is very much needed in this room) Wall decor should not include family pictures in this room. Where the gallery picture is now, replace with a gold/bronze mirror & antique chest. To the left of the window where the chest would be, I would install a lighted sconce, & also on the wall between the sofa on the right & the pillar partition. Put these on dimmers for subtle lighting to add to the table lamp light & even it out. Think about a set of 3 pieces of art that go from the ceiling to just above the sofa on the right.

I think if you are going for all "traditional" is looks really nice. I don't even mind the drapery! I would suggest adding a little more interest/depth and sparkle. This is my tweaking suggestions.
1. Replace the coffee table with glass/gold to mix up the matchy, matchy and add shine.
2. Paint the walls a pale lavender (or even a pale pink/coral) for a glam/romantic look with pillows/throw to repeat the color.
3. Remove the nook table cloth and make it your "morning space" for coffee and maybe add a small crystal pendant/chandelier over the table.
4. An accent chair (or two) to round out the conversation seating and feel inviting.

My gut reaction to your question was "I can't believe they took the plastic off the furniture." You have lovely things, but aside from the photos, which seem out of place, your room doesn't invite any living thing. Your alcove begs for a comfy chair for reading or just staring out the beautiful window. You have great bones, add some meat. Add some personality. Some of the other commenters have given specifics, but you know what you like. Just add to what you already have.

I am not the original poster but I am interested because of my similar room. I LOVE the "morning space" and reading nook ideas! Even though Adrienne seems to have vanished, I thank you. Here's mine. I just need a higher light fixture, right?

Patriciack you would get more responses if you posted your own Design Diiemma with your photos you have posted here. Especially since you are more active on the thread than the op seems to be now :) Also, your room looks a lot warmer than the original room, even if its the same floorplan. I'm sure the same posters would love to see your room from all angles and get the opportunity to help you.
