The living room is very neutral at the moment too. White sofa, similar wall color and white and marble fireplace. The fabric I picked is Robert Allen spring mix aloe. I just found this design board when I googled the image to show you. It seems nice, but still provides no art ideas.

Thanks! No, it was just an image I stumbled across when looking at my fabric choice right before I posted the picture. It does have some similarity to my kitchen though, white uppers, charcoal lowers, white subway tile, touches of antique brass.

-- Your upholstery is in the Jacobean scheme of things [1550-1625] that came over with the early immigrants from England & Scotland. Many feel it is colonial, and in a sense it is.

If you want to hang a painting, you should stay within the palette and colonial feel of your upholstery. There are so many prints out there that would work. I concentrated on finding other things you could use on the wall. I also kept in mind the chalkboard since the wall décor will have to play nicely with it.

Here are some architectural things that you could hang there.

If someone in your family is of European descent, you can probably easily find the family coat of arms, etc. and have that framed. A family crest, tartan can also be found [usually]. I know this is stretching most people, but it is an interesting research project none the less. I have done this many times.

A pair of sconces - simple iron is appropriate for your fabric - would be nice on either side of a large clock

Framed quilt fragments would work. [Colonial]. An iron medallion is good

A large clock with the look of some age might work. Note: the site would allow me to enclose only one clock at a time so they are all strung out, I'm afraid.

To fill the space, remember that you can hang sconces on either side of the clocks.

These are non-painting and non-mirror things for your wall that should not interfere with any artwork you might hang in the LR in the future - either that or should be easy to work with when shopping for art for other areas.

Great work!!! I love the 2nd clock the best! You mentioned keeping a colonial type idea going, which I do think speaks to my taste. It also makes me wonder if a picture or painting of Oak Alley ( historic plantation in Nola ) would be okay if I could find something well done? We honey mooned their, so it feels significant and special to us. Or am I way off track?

Pretty space. For art on wall I'm thinking some dreamy sepia tone photography. I say dreamy because I like to think about far away places while eating and relaxing or sharing a cup of tea with a friend. Preferably photos of somewhere I've been or plan to go. (beach, sailing, mountains) Will post idea if I can later.

I think that wall would look good as a accent wall with some wall paper, or paint stencils. I will attach some pictures of wallpaper that could look cool above it.

Yes, we framed up family crests, as suit our decor. Found plain raw wood frames and put a single coat of our mid teal paint called fresco. Looks terrific all grouped together.

For interest try digital photography printed to canvas. There are sites that will print any photo at any size. Look at high resolution photos for the best detail. Also sometimes a slightly out of focus photo is interesting. Attached is my one of my sites with prints I have done for some ideas.

Black and white art, framed photos or canvasses, would look great on your wall. Looks like a really nice place.

Your home seems to be more modern looking than Colonial in my opinion, but if you have children, have you considered maybe a big blackboard, or a big canvas with say a giant pear or strawberry? You know, something lively and kitchen related...

I guess upon further thinking and considering our décor and style, I know what I don't want. No family tree things, no vintage faux French ads, and probably no family crest, even though I do like that idea for the hallway. I love the idea of wallpaper, a clock or framed printed art in color or black and white. When we have some nice daylight, I will post a picture of the kitchen and living room. I am being very specific and saying SEPIA TONE photography not necessarily black and white photography which can look more severe. I like size of black board and black frames could tie into that nicely for art but, for the art itself I would want to be more soft, relaxing and dreamy (like wall color). Here I just grabbed some images from another project. The first two nature images were for a "new mom" break room area. The last 2 images were for another project.

I think you should find a picture of Oak Alley that you like and have it done in a sepia tone canvas for your art. You said that would bring happy memories...

Have you also thought of how much space on that wall you want to fill? One thing or several? If several then three, five, or seven items with mixed textures may add interest. Another thing -- any plates or platters that you have inherited may be ideal and recall nice memories. Or perhaps family recipes -- blow them up to the size you want and frame -- especially nice if in a friend's or beloved relative's handwriting. It is great you are considering the options for what you want to live with and look at daily.

Before you decide, wait until your bench cushions are in place. It will make a significant difference to how it looks.

Here is a picture of Oak Alley we like in sepia. Carolin's idea of waiting till the bench arrives is a great one. We will do that, but still keep hunting.

What size would you recommend for the wall?

It FEELS like art should be about same height as blackboard or no more than about +6" higher overall but, about 20% to 30% wider than width of blackboard. (including matting and frame) What size would that be based on existing blackboard?

It seems like wall could take a "series" of 2 or 3 of a kind or 1 dramatic image as you have selected.

I love Oak Alley. I think it would be awesome if you could get it as a wallpaper. Isn't there a company that can do that?

The wall space available is 93 inches long and 49.5 tall. The blackboard on the other smaller wall is 3 feet long and 2 feet tall.

to mrsfoutch.....let D.S. Brennan Photography give you some input! Can't say "over sized photography" strikes me so much as the right item for you as I can see SEPIA tone photography looking wonderful in your lovely space. But, I am out of time right now and apologize for that. I was initially thinking a 30" x 48" image matted and framed could work but, also, depends on the specific image but, I think you will get some good input it seems from D.S. Brennan Photography! Please post final look!

It may be easier to chat via email for specifics - diana@dsbrennan.com - there are a ton of mounting / framing options and a lot of it depends on your personal tastes and interests. I do like the idea of sepia toned or black & white in that space, but if you're looking for a pop of color (sorry for the cliche) that changes things. You mentioned fruit / veg pictures - that could be fun. Since the adjacent rooms are pretty neutral, you might not want to go too crazy with color. Maybe some greens or blues from the upholstery fabric you posted. Colors like those in the photos I'm posting here might work - these particular examples are my images but you wouldn't be limited to my work, of course.

We added a splash of color to compliment and add impact to our model. Another option to consider. Good luck!
