You are correct about not being indoor rated. My understanding is that as long as you install a vent hood above the grill, you are good to go.

Ryan, working with our architect and researching the building codes we have found no issue with installing the grill as long as it is properly vented. As our project moves forward, I will keep you updated.

There are absolutely no other exceptions in the California code to the contrary.

There are many other code issues with the installation of the unit in the original picture regardless of whether the unit would be allowed in general.

I hope your architect, at least, doesn't have their head in the sand so far as to not even follow these minimum clearances for such appliances as if they were allowed.

does anyone know of a manufacturer that makes a outdoor style grill rated for indoor use

I was planning to install my BBQ Grill inside in a room extension adjacent to my kitchen. The sales person told me that all real BBQ are for outside use only and to check with my insurance if that was covered. Since this room has almost only large patio doors, I taught they would let me do it. The answer was a No No. It would have worked if I had no doors , just screens.
