Help me choose a rug for a little girl's room.

I am searching for a rug for my almost 4 year old's room. I can't decide if I should go with a solid Color using one of the many Colors in her bedding (hot pink, turquoise, bright green), or go with a fun pattern. I have located a few online. What do you think? Her entire bedroom is White aside from one large Accent wall painted a coral/orange. We are ordering her big Girl bed that Looks like a White beach Cottage. I am making curtains for her dormer Windows out of her coral bedding with the White Polka dots. (pillows on her bed).

Thos. Baker, I love those striped rugs. I haven't seen any while Shopping online, but I am in Switzerland, so my Options are fewer than if I was in the US. A rug is just too expensive to Import from anywhere other than the EU.
I put several links on my orig post of rugs I have found. Since any rug I buy Needs to be able to be played on without losing legos, it can't be any sort of shag. It also Needs to be comfortable on a child's knees.
JudyGDesigns, the rug you posted Looks quite a bit like one of the ones I added a link to.
My daughter was looking at the links of the rugs I posted and liked the one with giant flowers and the one with the owls.
I am going to turn her bed into a desk once her new bed arrives. I am also tempted to paint the small bit of wall underneath the dormer Windows the same coral/orange. She has a large upholstered rocking chair in White denim I haven't added back into her room yet.

    Very cute room!

Of the rugs you posted, I like the owls best because of the colors. I would have selected the birdie rug at that website, but the colors were off.

I would make other suggestions, but not sure which stores are close enough to you in Switzerland.

I liked the birdie rug too, but the Colors don't work. I think my daughter likes the owls also and it is less than half the cost of the large flower one. I am looking at Websites in Germany and will have to pay the Import tax. There is NOTHING here. I have been looking for a while. One Thing I like about the owl rug is it has butterflies and I am planning on adding some paper butterflies in the Colors of the bedding to her large lamp.

Love the owl rug and the Benuta teppich splash. I see you have an Ikea lamp. Maybe they have a fun, good sized rug?

While I was wondering how you'll be making curtains for the triangular windows I had an idea (maybe you have the same idea?): triangular piece of fabric, rings in the corners with rope loops through those that you can attach to hooks. So, to open you just remove the rope loop from the top hook and let the fabric drop down so a triangle of fabric hangs upside down under the window. You'd need to make the fabric triangles double sided.
Did that description make any sense at all? :-D

I like Thos. Baker's second choice on the top right. It brings in more colors yet appears to also have the orange that is on your accent wall. I personally like the look of stripes with floral/paisley prints (the bedding)! Good luck....

carolins, thanks for the great idea! I have been deliberating on how exactly to make the curtains so they will function properly. I have to have my mom send me black-out fabric from the US. I can't get any here that isn't already an unattractive pattern or Color. Wish I had known since she was here for the Holidays. Your description made perfect sense and would look really cute with the room. Here is a link to the bed I am going to order soon:

Oh that bed is soooo cute!!!! Glad I could help on the curtain dilemma. Maybe you can just put an (ugly) blackout fabric between two layers of cute fabric? I can't really sew (only straight lines and even then I'm at war with the sewing machine ;-)) so I'm sort of clueless. But I know that there are simple kits available (I'm in the Netherlands) for attaching metal rings in fabric. If you make the triangular curtains, you can do two different fabrics. So you'll see one fabric when they are up and the other fabric when they are hanging down. What a fun project!

The Colors of her bedding don't match with the button rug. I looked at it the last time I was at Ikea. The Owl rug doesn't either. Ikea was the first place I checked. Haba has a great rug that would be perfect for her room, but it is discontinued and I can't find it anywhere. A friend of mine has it for her daughter's room.
All 4 Show, I like the stripes too, but finding that over here is next to impossible. I have looked. The few striped rugs I have seen are nowhere near the same or similar Colors.
The bedding came from Pottery Barn Teen.

carolinas, my best friend is also from the Netherlands and tells me all the time how much better and cheaper Shopping is up there. The owl rug in Germany will cost me over 100 Frankes less than a smaller Version I could get here. That is after paying Import fees and taxes and shipping. You make a good Point with putting the unattractive fabric in the middle. It would save me some really expensive shipping costs. When I am at the fabric store later today, I will see if they have the rings you mentioned for fabric. Probably not. It's hard to find anything you actually want here. Do you know what they are called? I could order some online in Holland, Germany or the UK and have them shipped.
I'll do a search and see if I can find the name for you. Maybe your friend can send them to you from the Netherlands if you can't find them there. I've bought a little set many years ago in a fabric store.

wow carolilns, you have been busy. Thank you! I forgot to look for them while I was at the fabric store, but I did find a plain White remnant of thick fabric to use between the 2 layers of orange and White I will be using for the curtains. Your Suggestion also inspired me to come up with a plan for the dormer Windows in my son's room. I found a faux leather fabric in red that will work great for him with large silver grommets in the Corners. His room is car themed and mostly White besides the med gray Accent wall and red race car bed, red rug, etc. I found him a neat clock that Looks like the speedometer on a car and we are going to hang old US liscense plates on his sloped ceiling between the dormer Windows at some Point.

Oh... sounds cool. Will you please post photos of progress? Would love to see how it turns out.
I will. It may take me a bit to implement my ideas and choices. We are remodeling quite a bit as well as landscaping and hopefully painting outside, so when the sun is out, I Need to get outside. Now that I have one back in school, I will find a bit more time to focus. I hope. I will post a few 'before' photos of their rooms. We have been busy. Now it's just time to decorate. I think it will be 2 to 3 months before my daughter's bed arrives. Unfortunately.

before photos. Now we are into the decorating Phase. Finally. 1st 2 pics are Girls room, 2nd 2 are Boys room
  • 12 years ago
Oh.. that's a long time to wait. It is such a nice bed. Wouldn't want to be the one who has to change the bedding, but that practical issue aside... it is a little person's dream bed. Nothing better than to have your own cute little hiding place. Good luck with the remodelling jobs and the decorating.

decorating in Progress for Boys room...I should add that my son picked out the room divider. He loved it and since it was on clearance for far less than a large print I was looking for, he got his divider. At the Moment, it is Splitting his room at the far dormer window and hiding his way too big racetrack his grandparents got for him.
Thanks Decor Team. That is why I haven't ordered a rug yet. I am worried about it being too much once I get the curtains made and installed as well as some fun pillows for the large chair that isn't pictured. Problem is, I haven't found a pink or any other solid Color rug that isn't a shag and that won't work for a small child's room. She Needs to be able to Play with legos and cars on the rug. Locally, all I can find is shag or some silly pattern with a big hippo or girraffe, Hello Kitty, Mickey mouse, etc.

Have you looked at the rugs they have where you've ordered the bed? They have some nice ones I thought. Look at page 4 under Kinderzimmer, Kinderteppiche. The acryl ones with the little stars for example or the checked ones

Love your sons' room :-) Not difficult to guess that he loves cars.

Thanks carolins. I never even thought of checking with them to see what they might have. I don't think the Colors are bright enough for her wall and bedding, but they sure are cute. My favorite was the green washable Cotton with the White flowers. Yes, my son is crazy for all things Transportation. Definately his father's son.

I think you need some pink to go with the whole theme. You can a lot of orange...u need a pop of color
  • 12 years ago
Don't spend a lot of money. She will ruin the rug. It'll probably be an adorable experiment with sharpie markers and honey, but rest assured, it will be a casualty of childhood reaching. Believe me, I'm all for the experiment!
roosterdavis, I have had plenty of experience with sharpie markers and Makeup on my Sofa thanks to my son. He got into everything. I definately don't plan to pay too much for a rug. I have seen some really nice ones, but the price tags on them sent me running the other way. We won't even replace our Sofa and Dining table for a few more years. Not until the Kids are older and it is safer. I will just suffer through my house not being decorated like I want until then.

I hear you, Lori. A nice option might be something from FLOR. If one square gets totally screwed up, you can always swap it out.
I haven't found anywhere I can get attractive carpet tiles over here. I am in Switzeland. Options are very limited and expensive. I considered that for the playroom, but 4 choices weren't worth the effort. I am going to hold off on buying a rug until I get the curtains made and some decorative pillows together. It may be the last Thing I put in the room, just in case. Hopefully, I can order her bed this month so it arrives before Easter. At the very least, it will give me time to Keep searching.
I just realized that I never posted an updated photo of my daughter's room. She got her new bed and while I haven't hung them yet, I did (mostly my mom) make curtains for her triangle Windows. They are orange with White polkadots. We used extra material from her bedding. We had a water leak between two bathrooms and that took up several months of our time, so I got distracted. It is fixed now and we are working towards getting each room finished.

I love the pink with the orange. Good job!

Thanks! I found it for half Price too. I was so excited. I liked it the first time I saw it, but didn't want to pay $300 for it. My daughter loves it. She now has her princess Castle sitting on it. Her bed now has the final piece on it too. In the photo, it is missing the section on the right side to Keep her from falling out of the bed. Now, I Need to make the curtain to hang over the open slats. My to-do list is way too Long.

I love it, the colours are great together. One thing at a time :-)
