Well, I won't be much help because I think that fireplace is nice looking as is. I think it would look quite nice with a subdued bluish gray color paint (more gray than blue). I can't imagine that would clash. Not sure I'd add a mantel either, just large art. A vertical canvas about the same width as the outside edges of the black frame of the fireplace would work. I have a similar situation and I like the simplicity of it.

A contrasting wall color would add interest.

What color would you suggest for the walls?

I actually think your bluish gray idea would be far, far better with the fireplace than the wall color that is there currently. The bluish gray would go nicely with the wood floor too!

Use the tiles to help you choose a paint color. You could go with a grayish blue as has been suggested, or possibly a brownish pink like a clay color or even a darker gray. I used my tile to pick out the color for my accent walls [my original color matched nicely], and it really made a difference.

A good way to get started is to go through the paint colors of a paint website. Behr.com has the best selection of colors as they show the chips with 4 different shades of the same color. You can use their room decorator to see how the color looks on a wall, and can load your own photos to apply it to. If you don't like a color, it lets you modify it until you do. I can't tell you the number of hours I spent doing that trying to come up with the colors for various rooms. It's also a lot of fun if you enjoy color.

I think the fireplace might look quite good with blue/gray walls. My bigger concern would be with the woodwork.

Grover, I think that's nice! Why are you concerned about the woodwork - it has orangey tones and blue and orange are complimentary colors?

Orange colors are warm colors. Blues are cool for the most part. Try a blue/gray that is closer to warm than cool, if that makes sense. I think that is what grover was getting at.

I've already said it, but no mantel in my opinion. It's a nice clean look as is.
