How is the runner fixed to the treads/risers? Stapled or glued?

Love the coral runner. The way it is fixed to the treads is a welcome change from the brass fixtures.

    If you decide to remove the runner, will the wood underneath be visibly damaged by the staples? We are considering doing same while the kids are little. Thx.
