Round tables are more common in Asian cultures where people tend to share multiple plates of food.

I like the oval that is shaped more like a surfboard,but are very hard to find in my area.

I like oval - fits into standard rectangular dining rooms well, which can sometimes be an issue with larger round tables, but the curve on the short ends means the line of the end of the table doesn't chop up the space as much if you have more of an open floor plan. (My house is small and you have to go through the dining room to get to the kitchen, chopping up the space and making a really hard visual line between the dining room and the living room just makes everything look smaller.)

Rectangular tables use the shape of the room to their advantage. The only downside is that it makes interaction difficult with those seating the farthest. We agree with Dytecture.

Currently our table is square. I like it because everyone is equal distance from each other and we can all talk and it is easy to have dishes in the middle on a "lazy Susan" and everyone can reach. I do like a large round table for the same reasons. This square table was a great price having 6 chairs and a bench included.

I'm ok with a rectangular table if it seats no more than 8 guests. If the table is too large, it's hard to have a conversation with everyone.

We had an oval that had been cut down for using as an Asian dining table, it was our coffee table for many years. We would use it now and again for eating chinese food at, really added to the experience. :) It is in storage right now... with thin cushions it was the perfect height, long story how we got it.

Round table is better for small dining rooms. It's easy to see each other and more friendly.

It depend on how many people usually sit at the table and how big is your dining room. Do you invite often? Is your family coming at your place for the festivities? I have a round table that can extent to become an oval and sit 8 people comfortably and I have the space to add another table and sit a total of 12 people during Christmas time, that is the number of my close relatives coming to my place on the 25th as family tradition. So it all depends on your needs. A round table is more social since everybody face each other, the oval shape is for larger number of guests, the square table is more convenient when the space is limited and the table companions are 6 at the most.

In our previous home we had a rectangular table, and now we have a round one. I like both, it really depends on the layout of the room. Our current home has an angular open floor plan, and the dining area is square-ish, so a circular element was the way to go.

Love round dining tables. But you can only fit so many people at them. If your hosting a bigger dinner party there is no way to extend. For that reason, I like rectangle.

Anyone can host dinner party at rectangle...takes someone special to pull it off on the round :)

Oval. Ours starts out round, seating only four, but it has five leaves that allow it to extend to all different sizes, seating up to 14.

Love round, but breakfast table is oval, dining room table is rectangle. Sometimes you have to work with your house. Not that I'm complaining!

Oval. Our starts at round and seats 4 , extended from 6 to 10. No worries about the head of the table . This is my 6th dining room table and is a keeper.

Round is definitely my preference! Unfortunately a round table is hard to fit into most spaces so we tend to lean toward a rectangular shape to optimize seating. There is NOTHING like a dinner party at a round table. Socializing at it's best!

I have an oval table . I seem to be drawn to them more than the round or rectangle.
