You need to decide where it is going first. lengthwise or cross wise in that room. In your photos, Is the 3 cushion couch against the wall and is it your intention to put the new one there with 2 chairs where the love seat is?

I think the 10' could work, but your arm chairs have to be small in scale.

I intend to do the new sofa where the full size couch is now facing the FP. And have two chairs either both facing the window or one on each side facing the coffee table.

I did a quick mock-up. This is sort of the layout I'm thinking. I'm just hoping this comfortable enough for a family room / lounging area

9 is a good compromise, go bigger but not too big!

I agree Grover. I'll have to find some good chairs with legs that are also comfortable. I'm also trying to do something more classic since everything else is trendy

After studying your photos and mock ups, I think the room can take the 10' Maxwell. It will dominate, but since you like to entertain and want plenty of seating, I think the extra foot of sofa is preferable to too many chairs. The two side chairs facing one another at opposite ends of the coffee table is the better configuration because it creates a nice balance with the sofa. Adding additional chairs in any configuration would probably make the area feel scrunched and uncomfortable, which, from the sounds if it, is what you're hoping to avoid.

Since the sofa faces the fireplace and you don't want to block the view, your idea of using a bench would be an effective way of creating seating without overwhelming the space. A bench is more open and could be used to "define" the entertainment area without obstructing the view of the fireplace.

A 6-7' upholstered bench centered with the sofa on the opposite side of the coffee table would be comfortable seating and also allow plenty of room on either side for entering and exiting the entertainment setting. Best of all, it would help you maintain that "open" feeling.

Christie, thanks for your comments. I like the bench idea a lot. Maybe my husband is right about the huge couch. I'll have to lay it out and see how it looks in real life. Part of me thinks - are five people really going to sit side by side on a couch? Maybe?

Jessica -- you know, I'd have to agree with you. Five people sitting all in a row might be a little awkward! But four people kinda look the same on a 9' couch! Putting four people on the bigger couch (easily) means they'll each have plenty of room and feel more comfortable sharing it. That, in turn, means they'll be more relaxed and have more fun.

And....you don't HAVE to go with a 6'-7' foot bench. You can go larger and create a couple more sit spots there! Just make sure the bench is a comfortable height and really comfy on the tush!

Oh...and I just thought of something else! Four grown ups on the big couch leaves plenty of room for any "little people" who might want to sit next to mommy or daddy when guests are over. Also, it's plenty of room for "little people" who just want to stretch out on a nice big couch alone with mommy and daddy!

I would still prefer the original sofa you chose as it has low arms. People can perch on it more comfortably, and you can balance foods and drinks. Also the low arms make for a wider more open look.

They're both gorgeous. The Maxwell has clean, contemporary lines. The Lancaster is more traditional. Which style goes best with the rest of your decor? AVS made a good point about the arms. If you're sitting on the end, it would be easier to rest your arm and hold your drink on the Maxwell. If you're taking cat naps on the couch, the rounded arms on the Lancaster would be more comfy.

That is the company that used to make the maxwell sofa. Now RH has them made in China

My furniture and house is more contemporary but I have been feeling that it feels a little cold especially after I painted with revere pewter. I also think everything I have is so current that I need some more traditional pieces to balance it a little bit. I'll probably go look at them again in person
