Begging for advice! Bedroom makeover

These are images of the mid-point of after. I will post the before next.
I would appreciate advice on the white comforter, the table lamp that looks like a Genie lamp, the mirror above the bed and choice of accent color. I don't know ifthe white bedspread is right or should I try to find something similar in cream. Will that work with the white trim? Also any other options for accent colors?
I tacked up a linen drape that matches the color of the wall and I hate it. I'm considering making my own grommet top drapes but am really having a hard time choosing a fabric color and texture.
There are a few choices in the pictures-dark throw and accent pillows.
I would like to get a bench at the foot of the bed eventually.
Thanks for your help!

    Here is the before picture taken a couple of days ago. This is what I've done with the advice given so far. All items in the after pic are returnable so-don't hold back:}

Dark wovens, dark furniture and what looks like gray walls.

I would not introduce another color; I would add more white. No throw, not those pillows, but the ones that go with the duvet (West Elm?), big white round lamps and lined white linen drapes and a huge painting over the bed.

For a mirror over a bureau, white also.

Would you go with white drapes also? What about a pattern? The walls are a bluish grey.
What colors should I look for in a painting? I feel like everything in the room is a solid color.

I would go with white. But a really good fabric, plenty of body and texture, and lined.

I think the blue/gray, brown and white would be beautiful.

oooooooh, I love that painting. Thank you!
Try just hanging the mirror or artwork a little higher, so the space between it and the bedhead is the same as the space between it and the ceiling. The pair of lamps looks much better than odd ones.
I love the pintuck duvet cover JudyG shared, however personally I find so much white a little cold so would certainly put a blanket or something over the foot as you have done, perhaps in a similar tone but darker shade to the colour you have on the walls.

the red pillows and green throw are clashing. I think that blue, brown, and green as an accent would look great :) get two lamps that match, and choose a curtain that isn't the same exact color as the wall.

The two matching lamps are my old ones. Someone previously mentioned that they are too tall and now that is all I notice-to skinny too:) I bought the taupe colored one to see how it looked in the room planning to buy a second if I liked it. Now I'm liking the idea of more white but will continue to look for the right one. Thank you for your help.--do you agree that white drapes would be best?
That wall color is great..what is the name of it?
I think the room needs some pattern, and would accomplish that with a patterned comforter. In addition, I like the round thing above the bed. There are so many rectangles in the room that round above the bed breaks it up, but I would go bigger than the one you have. Then I would get nightstands that are the same width as the windows and put lamps with some color in them possibly, or maybe clear glass because with a wider nightstand the lamps would look nice in front of the windows and the clear ones would not block the window light. Your current lamps look a little too small. I think the dark blue might be too much of a contrast with the rest of the room, so I would go lighter with that. Accent color? Maybe a patterned comforter with some colors and pattern in it, then pick one for an accent. I think the drapes look ok and with pattern in the room they'll look good.

    yes to white curtains
I would love to see white curtains here in a soft white textured or even a silk look. Are you thinking full curtains or panels?
I like your beautiful wall colour, great with your bed. I would limit the colours to blue/ grey, white and wood.
I actually like the feel of the lamp in your first picture with the drum shade, maybe just a little taller with a white silk shade. I would stick with white pillows and cushions and add interest with the textures.
The landscape picture looks too dark IMO, perhaps it is the frame. I would love to see something lighter here in picture and/ or frame.
Wondering too about a bench under the window instead of at the end of the bed.

I know you have not asked about this but I would suggest a tall plant in the corner on the right had side of the photo
  • 12 years ago
I also think that you need a pattern. You added the new lumbar pillow right? I think the more plain one looks better. Is that brown and white?
I think you could also go with a navy and white print. There are lots of great fabrics on fabric.com if you want to make it yourself. If you blow up the picture big while in the room I've had good luck matching the color. You could also look on ETSY. I have done both in our house.

(the first navy and white one here is similar to what we have in our bedroom which is similar to your color)

    Hi,
We all have these 'blank mind' phases. We have all been there sometime. I would suggest bringing in some contrast.
Here are a few options you could consider.

I love the simplicity of your room without curtains. I'd change the red pillows to chocolate brown. Keep the heart pillow and turquoise throw, along with the bedding.

I'd change the lamps to mercury glass or something with a little bling.

The mirror over the headboard is too small and the wrong shape. You could have two of them--maybe smaller ones--or a couple of pieces of art.

You've done a wonderful job and now just need to tweak.

Wow! Thanks everyone. I will be going shopping again today and will look for different lamps and maybe some other pillow and throw options. Luckily there is a lot in my color scheme out there right now. For drapes, I am leaning towards white, some what sheer like this
    http://cache2.artprintimages.com/p/LRG/68/6812/I4SI100Z/art-print/caroline-gold-flow.jpg

    Or more substantial like this:
    http://cache2.artprintimages.com/p/LRG/68/6812/I4SI100Z/art-print/caroline-gold-flow.jpg

Any thoughts? I'm wasn't thinking sheer as in an actual "sheer" just not lined light weight fabric. I like the small ring hung look as well as the larger grommet type.
The panels do not have to be functional since the blinds are blackout. It would be nice if they blocked some of the light coming in at the edge of the blind but not necessary-I might never wake up.
I like the idea of a bench under the window.
    Thanks again everyone!

What do people think about something like it for drapes?
What is the cost saving to making drapes/panels over buying?

Nice room. My suggestion would be to stick with the blue/gray and white with all the basics. Use prints and accent colors sparingly so you can change with seasons/moods without major expense. Your wall color is beautiful. Would you share name and brand?

Thank you the color is BM greyhound (1579) it is really easy on the eyes after a long day.

My comment on white unlined fabric is when some of it covers the gray of the wall, that color comes through the sheer and changes the color.

I really love Judy's idea of all white and the draperies being solid (not sheer) and full. When you come back with so much white it all becomes very serene and the eye can appreciate the color(s) you have already employed. This is most especially true with dark furniture and wall color. Good luck!

So I found these lamps today and like them. What do you all think? I'm still searching for a suitable throw for the bottom of the bed. I can find the exact wall color but not something that goes but doesn't "match". I'll keep looking but for now I have a pretty blue colored one on there that maybe doesn't "go".
I'm also going to go with lightweight white lined drapes to flank the windows and looking for a couple of chocolate brown pillows that don't look like doo doo:)

So, you are picking up the shape from your mirror! I like the lamps. They could be a little taller. The mirror could be a little bigger. It's just not a perfect world, is it? :)

Should I set the lamps on a book or two? White cover of course. I will keep my eyes open for a painting I love and then move the mirror. Or maybe look for two smaller sunbursts to flank it. I like the lamps but agree I wish they were taller. Do you think it is a deal breaker?

Sure, throw a few books down and see how you like it. I think I would almost prefer the too-short lamps over the "well, let's make things look taller and put a couple books down" idea. Try it. You might like it.

No to the two smaller sunbursts. Spend your extra money on the art. I've never been convinced that two smallish sunbursts are better than one. I'd find another area for the one you already have.

Oh, and with respect to a piece of art...Judy says huge and I agree. Fill up that wall, just shy of the width of your headboard.

In the left corner of this picture there is a lamp on white books, varying sizes with large on the bottom. You could cover any book in white wrapping paper.

Hi there, just started following you discussion because I recently painted my bedroom in a Color very similar to yours. I think you may need a nice bold piece of art with your existing colours and one bright one. Then take the bright Color and add a few little pieces to pull it all together. I attached a picture of my room, it's not done yet either but maybe it will give some inspiration!!!
Excited to see what you will do with your room!

Oh wait I wanted to attach the one with the curtains, I just hung them today so not sure about them yet. I like the gold with the blue but it's not for everyone.

Boy am I tired. I have been to the stores and back twice today and have just about reached my maximum artistic output. This has been fun. JudyG-I love the white and brown pillow and will probably order but having a hard time paying 10 dollars to ship a 30 dollar item. Couple more glasses of wine and it is mine though. :).
I think I'll skip the books under the lamps, I would not have even noticed.
The beautiful ocean painting above is sold but I am considering contacting the artist to commission a piece that would fit above the bed. If someone out there can photoshop that thing above my bed it would probably seal the deal.
The hubby is out of town this weekend and may have a bit of a surprise when he gets home. Hope he likes it--lol.
Really, that tired old comforter needed to go. He just has a hard time letting go of things.
I will slowly pick away at the ideas thrown about and post a before and after when I feel done - or at least done enough.
Thanks to all who have commented-I will continue to use Houzz and recommend to all my friends!
