Basement Ceiling Height

How costly is it to raise a basement ceiling? Our dark basement is about 1 foot shy of standard height. There's plenty of square footage, but nothing I'd want to finish unless it could feel lighter and more (head) roomy. Anyone have a similar problem that they resolved successfully?

Part of it is. But I removed the other part of the drop ceiling over my craft area and painted the beams white. It helped, but it's still tough to go down there and work....just too depressing and claustrophobic.
