Keep or Change a Red Kitchen?

Ten years ago, I renovated my kitchen in my Atlanta 1935 bungalow. I was inspired by a photo of a red farmhouse kitchen that I loved in a magazine, and decided to make a bold red statement in my own home. I have loved this for the last decade, but now I am contemplating a much larger reno including a second story addition and, in the process, reconfiguring part of the main floor. The change would include relocating part of the kitchen cabinetry and appliances (those on right side) to the back wall, and opening the kitchen up to a new family room. Currently it is one long, narrow space with a bedroom on the other side.

So the dilemma is this: To keep or not keep the red color when the remodel happens? Will I still love this color when it's a part of the family room? If I were to have the cabinets repainted, what is the best color choice? I feel constrained by the granite, which is dark beige, white and has some burgundy flecks. I know white cabinets are big right now - I worry that they are overdone since I can't seem to find pictures of much else! Would love thoughts & advice.

A dark charcoal or black would be a good contrast colour and work with the countertop.

Well my only two thoughts are these. Since you will have to incorporate this red color in your remodel family room, does that work for you? And two, white cabinets are classic and not simply a current fad. But more importantly, do you like white cabinets? I think your red cabinets are gorgeous, different, and bold. But because their quality is so high, I could definitely see them done in white thereby affording you more choice in decorating your new family room. Good luck to you.

I LOVE your red kitchen. I do a lot of kitchen & bath remodels and certainly agree that white will end up dated and is just a trend but having said that people often ask for it anyway. Most often my clients do either a natural cherry or a tobacco stain. Since your home is vintage my suggestion is to keep the red. Are you going to incorporate a large island in the new design? if so, that could be in a darker stain. View my Houzz page & look at my project books for examples.

We have redone our kitchen and painted the cabinets gray with red walls. I think that is still in

I would change from the red, simply because you will be opening to a family room. Certainly could keep an island or one area red. I too love red. It's a happy and unexpected color. Good luck.

Beautiful. I love it. Perhaps you can have the best of both worlds. Keep the red section (bottom right of your photo) and do something else with the others.

I love the Red too! They are beautifully crafted cabinets, and I believe that is what makes something classic, rather than the colour or wood tone. You won't need much red in family room to tie it in and have flow. Just some red in a few pillows or vases. In fact if you did red as the main colour in both rooms, that would be overpowering.

If you were ripping out the cabinets, perhaps a new colour would be considered. But this is still on trend, bold colours, everyone loves it, and it works. So vote for keep.

The kitchen looks great. If you love this look, you'll be bored with white. I think white is classic because it goes with everything. I have a white kitchen and it looks like so many millions of other white kitchens. Zero wow factor.

Think about what colors you want in your living room. Is sticking to some color scheme that works with your kitchen going to limit you? There are plenty of color schemes that would do just fine with a pop of red on one side of the room.

Love the red cabinets and I would keep them. You could change the uppers to white if you really need a change ... but I would just get new countertops.

Please don't paint your beautiful red cabinets white! They will look great in an open floor plan. I generally prefer to have the kitchen cabinets that open up to the family room look more like family room furniture than real "kitcheny". Your red cabinets accomplish that goal.

Indian Patti, what is the paint color of your red cabinets?
Love, love the red! Strangely enough he red will look less dated over time. Although white is a time honored classic, it is now "on trend", which means before too long it will be "out" - very annoying but true.

I immediately thought of doing two tone cabinets. Keep some red as accent cabinets but, change the rest to white. I love the red and think it would be better as less is more. Hope this helped

I love your red cabinets. Maybe you can incorporate a section of charcoal cabinets with your new Reno, or maybe a charcoal island. But don't change these gorgeous red cabinets!!!!

The red makes this room a standout. White is far too common. Don't destroy a good thing. When can I move in?

I suggest you do the remodel and then revisit what you want to do with the kitchen. Your kitchen choices should not be governed by your choices in an unseen space now. Get the addition built and see where your senses take you then. Somehow I think it will all come together at that point. For all you know you may decide to redo the kitchen in coppers and blues.

I agree with the majority. keep the red. It has a lot of energy. My thought is if you are a "red" person, you would think white was too sterile. Do you already have furniture for your family room or are you purchasing new pieces. What color scheme were you considering for that space. No matter what color you are thinking of, I bet touches of your red dispersed throughout the room would be very complimentary to your kitchen. I'd be interested to see what your current family room looks like....would give some idea of what your tastes are. Can you take more photos ?

I want to know where people are getting that white cabinets are a trend? White cabinets were never a trend and they have never been dated. White cabinets have always been an option for anyone buying new cabinets. They are classic and will NEVER go out of style. I love wood as much as anyone else, but white, off white etc, will never be dated period..

Maybe trend is not the right word. Classic White or off white is just more "popular" at the moment.

That red is a fancy neutral. We have found that many colors become a neutral when used on cabinets and ceilings.

If you were to change anything maybe a charcol granite for a more glam look?

lindabuzz - here is the current foyer furniture and adjacent dining room. Even if I purchased new furniture for the family room, I would envision it being fairly neutral. Thanks for your comments!

I think the red is great! Very unique and not something you see every day for sure. Once you open the kitchen area into the living room, I would recommend neutrals or grays in the living room with some fun red accents (decorative pillow, vase, tall candles ) to make the two rooms seamless!

I would mimic the table top wood for the wood portion of the countertop and perhaps add a bit more of the wood. In all of your photos the only thing I have issue with is the door in the family room.

Thanks for sending the photos of your beautiful home. It definitely helps. If you are going with the majority vote the cabinets are staying. Your kitchen cabinets and dining set have a cool farm house flair to me and it works very well together. I think you are right on track with making your family room more neutral . Your leather furniture is nice but it doesn't seem to mimic the farmhouse style. here's a few suggestions...
    1. Paint the walls a neutral color like softer tan. The yellow walls are pretty with red, but I think it doesn't flow as well into the family room.
    2. A rug under the kitchen table would ground the space and add interest. if you are keeping the large wall behind the table in your redo, I would put a very large vertical painting ( almost the size of the wall). with some red in it to add interest...something a little chunky and rustic looking would look great.... Maybe an aged black frame.
    3. A chunkier frame above the fireplace would look nice as well.
    4. Replace the leather furniture with your neutral color and throw in pops of the red and black colors with pillows and a throw.
    5. An area rug in the family room with vibrant colors would pop against the light would floor.
    6. Will your redo project change the layout of your entryway. It would be great if you could make that. A more defined space. That would give you more opportunities to create a conversation area in your family room. Right now, It looks like your front door is limiting you do to walk space. If that can't change, no worries, it still looks very nice. What are your thoughts on these ideas. Also, what's going on to the right of your kitchen fireplace? Is that a wine bar? I can't tell.

Thanks Linda - all great ideas and I definitely agree with neutral walls, area rugs, etc. The fireplace in dining room (pictured) will be gone to make room for the stairs and the family room you see is really an old school foyer. The new family room has not been built yet - I would like different furniture for it - ideally a nice neutral sectional!
