Both should be good colors with the tile. If you have pets know that their nails might snag
the berber and it can't be repaired if it starts to pull.

Good too know! I was also wondering if I should carpet the whole stairs or just a runner? I am thinking of painting the skirt boards and spindles white as well and maybe the hand rail

What about a stripe add a bit more interest

When carpeting your stairs, bend the carpet sample so that you can tell if it "smiles". To do this you bend the carpet between your fingers bringing the back of the carpet almost to itself (back to back). You do not want to see any of the backing coming through the front pile of the carpet on the carpet side of the sample. If I haven't explained this well, any qualified carpet salesperson will know what a "smile" means. Ask them.

Agreed about the "smile", I am taking that into account, I'm having a hard time with the color mostly and decided I should keep away from Berber too

Curious to know why you are covering up your nice oak steps. Carpet is so much harder to keep looking nice on stairs.

Well, the bottom steps are not finished hardwood or finished at all for that matter. I was looking for an easy transition from the top to the basement so that I could continue on with a laminate in a different but complimentary color ion the basement landing. Also, the hardwood is starting to show some signs of wear and I wanted to protect them.
