Looks like we have same wall color and wood floors. We just got this shaggy looking carpet. Went to store that sells carpet and had them cut and finish it like a rug. That way you can get exact dimensions. Our sofa back legs are set on the wood while front set on rug.

I really like the shag in the picture above, but you could also go for colour. There's no indication, though, in the room what colours or what kinds of design you might like. But I've looked at your living room ideabook and it suggests that you like your colour subtle, so that is a great starting point -- you don't look as though you would like the big, striking patterns. I'd say decide on what colour you'd like in your room and then explore subtle patterns that use that colour. You might well decide to stay with the neutral, but you will have considered the alternatives.

I think I have a pretty cool design solution to your problem. I attached a customized screen shot (using www.purehome.com's Design Space) of a couple of pieces that would enhance your existing brown sofa and chairs.

I selected a nice rug that was the focal point for my decor selection, it had the right blues, whites and browns to tie the design together and I think it would look really nice on those beautiful light wood floors of yours!

That is beautiful! I do love teals, blues and browns....But i am always nervous at first. ;) thank you so much for taking the time to decorate my room like that. I love the color that Mark added for you. Great idea. I can't understand why your TV is so high. It looks like everyone needs a recliner to watch it. Couldn't you have mounted it on the adjacent wall instead?

Jeesh...well we wanted room to decorate the mantle and we had the wires run behind the wall to mount the tv above the fireplace

Try oriental rugs, many colors, they let you take them home to test. I'd add some red in all that brown, but would stay away from a solid color rug. The oriental can be handmade or a woven copy is less expensive.

Looks to me like you could use a splash of color. Lots of safe colors and tones in this room. I say go for it maybe work in some similar accent colors in the accessories and art work. Good luck!

You are going to have a lot of options here, the challenge is going to be deciding on the right size for the room. You can go with several sizes, although based on the proximity of all the furniture I think you would be best going for the largest area rug the room will allow for. Good luck!

Thank you Old New House. We were thinking of an 8 x 10. The room itself is around 19 ft long, but there is another room behind it so we didn't want the furniture to be right on top of the adjoining room/walkway. We are open to moving furniture around and have done so a few times. Do you think an 8 x 10 would be a good size?
