I'm just striking out here. The reviews say it's definitly burgundy and not red. Burgundy will not work for me. However, we all see color differently. It's so hard to tell true colors on a computer monitor!

This one is red when you zoom in on it on the site. This one seems to blend quite nicely with your walls.

Hey Mark, I knew there was something not right about the rug I had in question. The picture you posted with it in my foyer shows a very light almost white border around the outside edge. This rug doesn't have a white border! With that being said, I could see that one working as well!

Pick something with a light colored border. If the outside border is dark, especially if in a shade of red, it's going to visually fight with the wood stain of the floor.

Lovely floors! You need to protect them with a beautiful rug, but just make sure it's not an antique that can't (or shouldn't) be put in that high traffic area. It's got to be durable, washable and attractive. Think vibrant color that will bring warmth into what is probably a chilly hall on a winter day. You could have two rugs: one for fall/winter, one for spring/fall. This serves two purposes: variety and an opportunity to clean one, while the other is on the floor.

I actually did remove my foyer rug and went with bare floors. The foyer looks so much bigger.

Be sure to buy the rug backing too. I have area rugs and runners and the backing keeps them from moving around and people slipping. LOVE the rug with the red inside and gold edging. Very rich looking.

I'm adding a rug for visible interest, and making it more welcoming for guests than a bare floor. I don't think it makes the space seem smaller, because its open to three other areas of my house.

Mark is right on the money for your rugs. Do you have plans to spruce up your walls? What if you replace your lamp with a glass one.

Yes, Mark did a great job! Actually, I've ordered the last rug he has posted. I'm not completely sold on the one I have now. It was suggested that I replace the mirror with a taller one and replace the lamp with a decorative bowl.

I'd suggest a geometric patterned runner in the colors of your large rug. You'll add some interest without overwhelming the eye with too much floral.

I really love the runners that were chosen for your foyer but my main concern are the very first feet of the entrance when people walk in with wet or soiled footwear ,for there I would use a smaller rug that can be easily washed and shaded out. so for this I would find one similar to the runner that you choose ..

As you enter the door, you're one short step from being on the rug. This isn't a high traffic foyer!

A rug should be placed directly at every entrance so you step directly onto it immediately after crossing the threshold. Oriental rugs made from 100% wool whether machine made or hand knotted will be able to handle traffic for years. Priceless antiques may need to be protected for investment purposes but decorative antiques function well and look fantastic even when worn.

Frequent vacuuming with an attachment (not a beater bar) is the best way to keep your rugs clean. If soiling occurs from wet, muddy feet blot and then allow to dry, vacuum and use club sofa if a stain remains.

The border does not have to be light. A dark color will work with any hardwood color.

I think your lamp is stylish and works well.

a rug when chosen with an appropriate color palate, compliments the wood floors & brings out their natural beauty. I don't agree that a rug 'must' be placed at every entry way however.

I was looking at the photos of your entry way, most everything is rectangular. Try adding some other shapes, like an oval mirror above the table. Replace the frame that's on the left with circle photo frames and maybe replace the black frame with some wall sconces candles . Even an oval runner rug would look nice.

Melodie55- I live in the Northeast US. I would never put a beautiful rug at my entrance. I need a small rug for shoe clean off. Then maybe a few feet over goes the beautiful rug. It depends on where you live.

I too live in the northeast & nothing more needs to be said....snow, snow, snow ! but today, there are so many beautiful rugs on the market that are almost indestructible, but a small 'wipe your feet' rug makes sense too.

Too much red. If you could find a rug with less red but with a 3rd color for contrast.

I think Marc gave you fabulous advice about the rug. Too matchy is not a sophisticated look, IMHO. I love rugs that look like you have collected antique rugs in your travels, not like you've gone to "Floors Galore" and ordered a set! I also agree with a taller mirror and decorative bowl or vase. Would your entry table fit on the other side of the doorway to living room/dining room? It looks like where it is, it would get bumped when the front door was opened. It looks cramped. If you need a lamp there, I'd get a tall buffet lamp with a narrow shade. A lampshade should not be the same depth as the table. Happy decorating!

I agree with Barb that they are too much of a match. I like the one Mark has put forth. It really brightens the entrance with the added bonus of hiding more dirt…therefore, looking nice longer especially in an entrance.

Bostonsouth, if you knew the amount of red clay soil here in the south you would understand that I'm all too aware of the need to wipe your feet. 30 yrs of design with clients all over the world have given me insight to all the dirt that can be tracked upon floors. Unless you are mucking the stables or do not use electricity like the Amish any dark colored WOOL rug of good quality can stand up to anythng. My daughter has a machine made Karastan I purchased when she was 8 and 30 years later it's still going strong. I hate to admit it but baby vomit, pet training, spaghetti "O's and anything else toddlers can throw have been spattered all over. Granted the background is black but there are pink, blue and green flowers in the rug. The only harm has come from the fringe getting caught in the beater bar of the vacuum cleaner....learned the hard way to use the attachments minus the brush intended for hardwoods. Stark carpet insist that all carpets benefit from this form of cleaning.
In my current home I'm used an Asmari black background rug at my front door for 12 years with no visible staining. I've walked in from pruning roses with wet feet and mud...just let it dry and vacuum.
Allow color to flow but relax about which choice is best. Use what makes you smile when you pass by. After all, rugs are art for your floor.

too matchy match and looks kind of polyester-y. Go with something unusual since you are only in the front hall a short time. try a kilim or a gebbeh. Get what you like, not what "matches" and you'll never go wrong. I have an antique wool runner in the front hall, and step on it in all sorts of weather (New England). Use what you love, good ones can take it.

Hi I had the same issue and then found FLOR .. I had an artist friend come up with a few sketches and now I have custom color and size hallway runner and its easy to clean... Give it a shot

My brother-in-law owns Tamarian (www.tamarian.com) and they make very high end rugs. I can attest that a quality rug will bear up in an entryway. We have had one in our dining area for years and recently added one to our entry; neither is showing any signs of wear or staining even through the mess that is our Michigan winter and a young family's nightly dinner.
