I personally would not hang curtains in this space.

You have a neutral backdrop in your favor right now, so really, you get to choose the color you want. I do not see a lot it would fight with. A pattern would be nice with all the solid furniture and probably just side panels, right? I like blue with the brown couches and think it would work with your rug, too. Would you also carry it to the other room?

Your space looks great! I would add some pillows with a pattern and a solid throw...no curtains needed.

Love your windows as they are -- if you are not getting heat or cold issues, I would ask a pro for help in adding color and texture to your space. Pillows, sure, but any natural fiber would work as in baskets, plants (the latest "in" accessory from Europe is museum quality prints and objects of flora and fauna -- think natural history museums in 1900). If changing the furniture is not an option, adding curtains will make the space seem heavier; changing furniture to a lighter scale and color (like your rug) could be expensive. Instead I would consider layering smaller, colorful rugs and throws over the more neutral rug, and dark furniture, perhaps in deeper tones that would center the seating area. Throws can almost work as furniture covers -- like a curtain, beginning from the floor in back, under the cushion and down to the floor in front. This does not need to be expensive and can be a process of accumulation from thrift stores. See also Spoonflower. Nothing fussy, but large scale and organic. Greens and primary and secondary colors as well as strong neutrals. Frames in interesting woods. Dried palm fronds. Shells. Bones or "faux" if you squeamish. Be careful when buying used (like taxidermy) and stay away from anything stuffed, or that cannot be immersed or frozen to eliminate the flora and fauna from the 21st century. If it suits your politics, a leather rug in cream and chocolate -- or a shag in faux fur. If your heritage -- or your friends', or your would be heritage -- is exotic -- or if you can in any other way find a theme -- all the better. My bland foyer has pictures of places we have been in different media -- all second hand or thrift store, and I am not concerned about fading of these finds with the bright light as the investment is minimal and fading can add to the charm. I think if you were to get a combination of black cream and a bright color to add some extra interest like red .
