Hallway with no natural light, which color?

last modified: 12 years ago
What color would work best for this small hallway with very little to no natural light? I would love a fun bright color but dont know if that would work. Found some samples that are more neutral that might work. What do you think?

(oh, and the woodwork is white but lighter than on the photo as it was just painted, the hallway floor is a lightcolored laminate and the stairs have brown carpet)

Yes agreed - would suggest something much lighter.

I would go with the paint color on these walls warm but not harsh.

Don't like any of them to dark. What is rooms you can see from entry? So are you painting a stair well? Need more pics.
Yes, it is a stair well. The doors upstairs and downstairs are white.

Agree with the others to go with some lighter versions of those shades. :)

Thanks! Would a matte or a glossy paint be better here?

The blue is lovely. We have a darkish hall also and we painted it a medium blue, Parma Grey from Farrow and Ball. It's beautiful a and gives a restful undersea feel. I agree that the olive and neutral tones will look drab. Or go really dramatic with a super dark blue like F&B Stiffkey Blue?

I love what you've done with the walls! Very creative.

No really, all the colors you show on the walls are not good for a small, dark hall. BTW, what is the adjacent room? Is this a hall from the garage into the house?

Without knowing where this hall leads and what it connects to wouldn't know what to advise.

Can you show pics of the connecting space? Just picking a color out of thin air or a "fun" color may not be the best option.

Its a small hallway from the front door to the living room. But its seperated by a (white) door so you dont see directly into the living room. The photos below show some of my living room and kitchen but it isnt finished yet. The colors there are white, navy, fuschia and will maybe add gold.

The stairwell has white woodwork and brown carpet on the stairs.

Upstairs are also white doors. Leading to the bedrooms and bathrooms. One bedroom is has a sort of dark taupe color on the wall (will get a better photo tomorrow), the bathroom is mostly white and the other bedroom has yet to be painted. It will probably be white with pale pink and gold combination but I havent decided yet.

I agree with the ours... I would go with a much lighter color. There isn't a lot of light in the area so a lighter color will help open open the room up. If you paint a darker color in the area it will feel much smaller. Good luck:)

    Go with grey

Do you really need the white door that closes off the living room from the hall? If not, maybe think about removing the door.

    Really cool sofa color.

Add art and move your sofa slightly away from the curtains and slightly away from the back wall. Maybe add a small end table same height as sofa arm and lamp in a color.

This is huge from etsy.com Your room is small but it could handle a large painting.

I like interior rooms painted dark with bright white trim. I would paint the walls the exact same brown as your rug.

Add a great canvas painting with some of your sofa color in it.

Next to the sofa is now a white arc lamp that I love. I bought it yesterday and isnt on the photo yet. To connect the sofa and chair I want to add the black and white Stockholm rug from Ikea.

For the wall behind the sofa I would LOVE the petal pusher wallpaper but even for that small area it will be 250 dollars so thats a bit pricey for such a small amount of wallpaper. Am still looking for something similar or other great print but havent found it yet.
Here are some pictures of the wallpaper.

Stay light and a slight sheen maybe a sateen finish would be good but not high gloss unless you plan on going ultra modern.
Could you get samples of that and other coordinating papers/prints, frame them and place them up the stairway with a light paint for the background?
I saw that recently in an ideabook on here but can't remember which one and don't see it right now. I'll keep looking.

The wallpaper I had in mind for behind the sofa, not for the hallway. Haha, we seem to have two rooms in one thread now :)

What color is immediately off the stairwell and hallway? Is this stairwell part of the foyer/entry? Generally, the foyer should introduce you, your style, and the adjoining spaces to guests. Grab the color strip card for the color in your major adjoining room, and go to the lighter end of it for your paint. You might try the petal pusher paper just on the wall at the top of the stairs. This would show nicely from the foyer down below if the stairs are in your entry.

Its only a tiny house, when you walk in the front door there is a small 'hallway' leading to the living room. The living room is painted white so I cant go lighter ;)
Up the stairs it leads to the bedrooms and bathroom. The bathroom is white, one bedroom is a sort of taupe color and the other bedroom still needs to be painted.

For above the sofa I would love the petal pusher wallpaper but find it too pricey but if I find something similar there might be something goldtoned on that wall.

The thing for me is that I would love more color and a bit of sillyness with prints and such in my house. I like for it to be more cheerfull, a bit girly and bright. I cant really find that balance though, I either play it too safe or want to turn my house into a circus. haha

I love Emily Hendersons style and am trying to find a balance between colorful and fun and also put-together.

Sounds like you need to take color to the living room, then go lighter up the stairs. Art could solve a lot of your desire for color and print. Are you afraid of art?

cupcakesss....after looking at your paint swatch pics again and your living room, kitchen and bedroom pics.....I get a feeling you like the hot pink color? Is your living room to the left of the staircase or do you go straight down the hall from your front door to the livingroom?
I'm actually thinking that maybe the hot pink of your sofa and placemats from your dining table could be the color for the stairwell wall to your right going up the stairs. Leave the other side white. I'm not sure with the brown carpet though. You could always get a sample of a hot pink and try a 3 x 3 ft section and see how you like it. Take one of the placemats to the paint store and tell them you want to color match it....maybe a little brighter though so it would be more the color of your sofa. Silver framed prints on the wall as you go up the stairs.

I like that wall paper. You could stencil a similar pattern. probably under $100 for the stencil. I still can't quite visualize that stair way, but I'm thinking have fun with it. If you don't wall paper or stencil the living room , then do the stairway with a stencil or wall paper. If you do the living room then do the stairway with a graphic rug or stencil the steps.

You mentioned Emily Henderson. Her work is all about layers. Well, a lot of it is. Layers of patterns and textures. Go ahead and pitch your circus tent then edit it down. Right now your rooms are feeling underwhelming and showing your reticence. As someone told me once, get your freak flag flying. Paint raspberry and white stripes up your walls. Or paint the risers on your stairs with a fun color or two. You want a party in your house so give yourself permission to do that.
I like the raspberry and white stripes idea.

I ended up deciding on an ice blue color. Still very light as most of you suggested. I wasnt sure if it was going to work when I bought it, I was afraid it might be too cold (they didnt call it 'ice blue' for nothing ;) but I really like the effect. Its definately cold but it is also bright and makes this dark small hallway feel much lighter and brighter. Maybe add in some white frames with pastel colored art or something soft pink might be nice...

Hi, please check out wall to wall stencils. There is a daisy dot medium stencil that is similar to the expensive wallpaper . It would look great. Have fun!
Where would I find those stencils? I dont think I have ever seen them in hardware stores here. (Im not from the US) Is there an online shop for them?

I'll definately post an after photo! :)

My recommendation for a dark hallway is SW 7526. Maison Blanche. And paint trim white. This color has slight grey undertone and it does contrast beautifully with the white trim. A friend had your same dilemma i her stairway and hall used this color and came out beautiful. in the evening with the correct lighting looks elegant and clean.

If you have your heart set on one of those colors, use it. My house has very little natural light. I bought the color I wanted and a gallon of bright white, same brand, same sheen. Get a bucket with a lid and start making some mixes. If your stairwell is real dark, start about half color, half white and put some on the wall. Let it dry and watch it for a few days. You can add more color or more white to get what you want. Good luck!

Hi, the company I looked at was "wall to wall stencils ". You can search the internet for wallpaper stencils. They are cool because if you want to change it later on, it is just paint and you don't have to deal with wallpaper removal . Enjoy!

A dark room will make whatever you choose seem several shades darker so lean towards a lighter color not necessarily a pastel just not so deep. A grayed version of a bluish green could be very elegant and would make a perfect base color for any other decorative touches. For a good example go to valsparpaint.com and check out the blue neutrals. Two of my favorites are Sauna and Ebb Tide. You can choose similar colors in other paint brands. The main thing to consider is how the light or lack of affects the room. Look at white in that room decide if it looks yellow, gray, or beige. Then realize that whatever shade you choose will also take on those hues. If the white appears gray for instance then choosing a shade with a small amount of gray will look more blended with your decor.

Can you put in a light tube? We put one in our upstairs hallway and it floods the entire space with natural light and was less than $130 and installed on a Saturday afternoon.

    The result :)

    Hey Cupcakesss,

If your hallway lacks natural light, we suggest that you choose a lighter color such as white or yellow to create a more open space. The colors you had posted are much darker and require more light to make the room appear brighter. You have probably already painted your hall, but for others who come to this post I will mention this paint tutorial which suggests mid-tone paint colors for dark rooms and explains why light colors aren't the best choice for small dark spaces, http://www.housepaintingtutorials.com/room-paint-colors.html

Hi, love the cool blue you've chosen. Could you post a picture if it in the hall/stairs? I have a similar dilemma and am leaning the same way. Thanks!

Second from the left in the middle picture looks good. Kick it up a notch with an orange or yellow bannister. Farrow and Ball's BORROWED LIGHT is an excellent ceiling colour.
