Jade Mountain- St. Lucia. It will blow your mind. Period.

A totally mediocre motel in Tehuacan Mexico ... just an average motel in a non-resort town.

BUT because the area is where a lot of onyx is mined, I had a solid onyx tub, solid onyx sink, onyx tiled bathroom and the entire dining room was tiled in onyx.

I've been fortunate to stay in a number of great hotels--though prefer to take apartments now--I'm "hoteled out"! The Hotel Estheréa in Amsterdam captures the belle epoque feel beautifully, the Conrad in Hong Kong is modern and grand, and the Penninsula has spectaular suites--dining room for 8, bathtub big enough for the same crowd with views to die for and a Rolls to pick you up at the airport. The Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok has great two story garden wing suites (as well as historically impressive "author suites" in the annex. Too many to mention, but for me, the difference is attention to something unique that captures the spirit of the place. Isn't that what good design is all about?

City Flats Hotel, Holland, Michigan

It certainly wasn't high style, but I adored this funky motel in Baraboo, Wisconsin, for its midcentury vibe and spirited decor. I wanted to see every room!

I love finding great boutique hotels on my travels. A few of my absolute favourites are L'Otel in Paris, The Standard in Manhattan and Casa de Madrid in Madrid. Deep sigh...

The Greenwich hotel in TriBeCa Manhattan. The rooms are amazing. They have a fabulous zen vibes swimming pool and spa in the basement. All the candy and crunchy snacks...best of...refilled every day for free in your room. It's owned by Robert DiNiro and there are lots of celebrity sittings there. The drawing room is fabulous with a glowing fire.

I might be slightly prejudiced, but I looked at 29 inns from Maine to California before I found the Brewery Gulch Inn in Mendocino. The setting perched on a bluff-top overlooking the Pacific, the zen-like peacefulness, the Arts and Crafts-style décor. It is truly unique...

L' Hotel on rue des Beau Artes and the Hotel San Regis on rue Jean Goujon in Paris are just two of my all-time favorites. When we checked into top floor suite of L'hotel around noon, where a chilled bottle of Veuve Cliquot awaited us, the young bellman was excited to tell us that Robert de Niro had moments ago checked out of that room. At the San Regis I became quick friends with Patrick Teraill, whose aunt owned the hotel at that time, and who himself owned the fabulous Ma Maison in Los Angeles, and who got us into his Uncle Claude's restaurant, LaTour d'Argent for Sunday night dinner, notoriously a difficult table to get on any Sunday, but this was three days away and my husband's birthday, no less. No problem for Patrick securing us a coveted window table overlooking the beautifully-lit Notre Dame. The numbered duck was superb and the night and the Bordeau intoxicating and sublime! There's also my favorite in St. Remy de Provence, where we stayed many times before we tried out the little cottage on the grounds so we can cook up some small thing and wonderful in its kitchenette, with absolutely the freshest ingredients from the day's nearby markets. I can't think of the Hotel's name at the moment but my dog Remy is named for the town, which my husband I "discovered" even before the beautiful Princess Caroline of Monaco. Oh, thank you for breaking loose these wonderful memories!

Having been blessed to have stayed in hundreds of hotels worldwide, The Heritage House Resort in Mendocino, California is highest on my list. Situated immediately on the cliffs of the Pacific Ocean, the views are breathtaking (in the true sense of the word!). You may know it from the cabin in "Same Time Next Year" featuring Alan Alda. The construction gives each room a private balcony with unfettered views of the ocean. We stayed in a deluxe King room that included fantastic bed and linens, kitchenette, luxurious marble bathroom and a sitting area with fireplace. A wall of windows meant the Ocean view was never obstructed. Walking the beach was awesome and watching the sunsets memorable. The quaint village of Mendocino is minutes away and is brimming with wonderful restaurants and interesting shops. We flew into San Francisco, drove north through the Redwoods State Park and then along Highway #1 that hugs the coast. Most beautiful natural scenes I've ever experienced. Returning south, we drove inland on Hwy #101 and visited the wineries of Napa Valley.

Portland, Or. has a bunch of hip, trendy places to stay. A couple of my favorites are Hotel Lucia http://www.hotellucia.com and The Nines http://www.thenines.com. The Nines has an enormous interior courtyard that's covered and serves as the restaurant. Really cool.

La Poseda in Winslow,AZ. It is a funky, fun place and if you like trains a must!! It is a renovated railway hotel lots of history.

No pics but the Madonna Inn. At paso Robles, ca was very different. All rooms had a theme. The Doryman Inn. In Newport bch, ca with ocean views and a 1800s look. Very nice.

The Government Rest House in Ellora, India. Not cool that it reminds of colonial days but otherwise, completely romantic, with its moghul-shaped 3" thick carved-marble window "screens," mahagony canopy beds, oriental rugs, and view of a misty valley that stretches forever and is dotted with what I think were little shrines.

Three way tie...American Inn in Kohler, WI, the White Gull Inn in Fish Creek, WI, and the Hotel Bellwether in Bellingham, WA. The other two that come in close would be The Cody in Cody, Wyoming and The Inn at Cedar Crossings, Room 9, in Sturgeon Bay, WI. However, looking at the photos of some of the other posts, the places I have stayed in don't come close to the opulence of some of the others pictured. I was going to say La Posada in Winslow Az too! An old Santa Fe railroad hotel that has been restored and has so much rich history from The railroad, celebrities, WWII, it's such a historic gem. And the Turquoise room for dining, I wonder if the same chef is there from 5 years ago? This place is a national treasure!

BATES Motel...lol

Post Ranch Inn, hands down. I always feel like I've come home when I stay there. Mickey Meunig's organic architecture only adds to the experience.

Hotel G in Beijing, China's Chao Yang District was clearly the best stay in the city. Hand stamped printed walls, deep rich/cool colors, chic 1940's retro mixed with modern/urban design makes you feel like you're living in a scene from Blade Runner.

My favorites are the Wynn and Harrahs in Las Vegas
