Box pleat valance pleat width

I'd like to make an inverted box pleated valance for a 40 inch window with just 1 pleat in the center (do to a very large print). With each half being so wide (21 inches), should the pleat be wide? 3 inches or so on each side? Is there a standard width for the pleat? Thanks!

If I were you, I would plan the pleat location and size by taking the length of fabric and pinning it in various configurations to see what looks most pleasing to the eye. You may want to have one flat section centred, flanked by a pleat on each side, and a short flat area at each end. There are lots of tutorials on YouTube to help you too.
