Need help with backyard patio ideas please

Ranch style home in So Cal. See attch photo. Want to have simple built-in BBQ near the AC condensor on the left. Then in the middle this will be a seating area. Debating if the tree should be removed. Will build patio wood structure/cover. The photo was taken towards the west, so this area gets some sun. Want just pour concrete, nothing exotic. There are two exterior doors that lead to this area. The inside area behind the 3 windows is our living room, did not want french doors there since the only way the room would work would be to have windows and no doors. Should the concrete slab be curved behind that tree or sharp 90 degree angles ? What would you do ?

I would design a curved stamped concrete patio , how far depends on funds...go around tree, I would keep it add flowers on one side & a bench on the other to make it a feature . Add an Acapulco style pool behind the grey house , add same 4 bushes along back walls in a raised , natural stone garden wall . Add more if you have more room. Keep bushes all the same since yr house parts are also showing replicas, Add Malibu lights along pool & bushes to add drama . & spotlight the tree at night too . You could also put a kitchen in an L shape near the door ... Where are the doors ? Add some open glass doors somewhere... Maybe two sets .

I would remove the tree it's very close to the house. Also you will put a patio in and as the tree grows it will rip it up. One of the best ways to plan a patio is to get flags and mark the area these can be made with craft sticks and paper. Getting a good visual idea of the area you want to allocate will be very helpful in seeing if the items you want on the patio will fit nicely in the space.

I would use a curved line and keep the tree. Hang some patio light from it.

Hello Annolsen,

You have some great geometry to work with, I would definitely make the patio rectangular to work with the house. Consider your prevailing winds before you locate the bbq so you don't have smoke blowing across the whole yard. Also if it's possible locate the bbq closer towards the kitchen. There are also low cost alternatives to concrete. Here is a model for a client in Kingston, RI.

In addition to knowing the wind patterns (and remember, they can be different from am to pm) and distance to/from kitchen for BBQ placement, make sure you know how loud the AC condenser is when it is running. I've had quiet ones and louder ones. It would be awful to be stuck with built in BBQ near a loud condenser. I'd keep the tree if possible, and I love the idea of putting lights or lanterns hanging from it. It would look nice from inside the living room.
