Hi Brian, the grip strip is black walnut, inserted into a 10mm deep trough, the strip itself is about 1mm higher than the tread, and there is a chamfer round both trough and strip. We use these a fair bit, as they help visually when going down the stair, but they also allow us to fix tread to riser with screws, hidden below the strip... hope this helps!
