This is actually a man made material created to emulate an exotic wood and is called Madagasgar Ebony. We use these types of products for two reasons, the first being that it's the responsible thing to do over using rare and exotic hardwood harvested from tropical forests and second because our very dry climate here in Colorado is somewhat ill suited for the introduction of tropical hardwoods for use in cabinets, the wood could experience swelling, shrinking and or cracking and other undesirable effects in response to the temperature and moisture content variations.

First of all this is no wood it is a laminate you don't need to sugar coat it by calling it a man made product.... yes laminate holds well in a kitchen which is why we use it in commercial projects all the time ex: hospitals are stocked with laminate cabinets. It just has a more modern look to it so don't think you will be able to use it in older houses.
