What do you all think of IKEA kitchen?

While on vacation with my daughter, hubby went to IKEA and is now sold on an IKEA kitchen for our kitchen reno... The price is more than perfect but will it only last 5 years? They have a 25 year warranty...

I really value the opinions I get on Houzz, what are your thoughts and ideas on an IKEA Kitchen?

I like a lot of IKEA design concepts but I strongly dislike use of particleboard in kitchen cabinets for ANY brand, including IKEA. Most other brands have the option to upgrade to all plywood construction.

Some posters on this board will swear by them, others will swear at them.

If going the RTA route, I would order Titusville cabinets from Kitchen Resource Direct online. Don't know if they ship to Canada. In the U.S. they ship free with $2,000 purchase. They have lifetime warranty, maple fronts, all plywood construction, I-beam construction, etc. IMO they use far better materials than IKEA.

Don't know what cabinets are available in Canada.

Some IKEA cabinets (Harlig, etc) I consider total junk. Adel Medium brown has birch front ( boxes for all IKEA cabinets have same construction). This is a good, not great, cabinet at a good price point.

The better IKEA cabinets, such as Adel Medium Brown, will last lots longer than 5 years, probably 20 years.

IKEA has new line of cabinets coming out to replace Akurum and the two lines are not compatible. I would wait until new line is available.

Ikea kitchen in the rental I own is starting to show wear at 12 years...but renters are rougher than owners.

dclostboy, were these lower end cupboards since it was a rental? We are thinking of getting the higher end styles...

Hello Ilene! There's a great saying in the design industry: Don't put good money after bad. If you are considering these cabinets for your current home & you plan to stay there for a while, then I don't recommend them because they will not last. Companies such as the one you mentioned sell product, not service & although they may look great in the showroom (where they can be modified daily if they fail) your home is another story. Your home is your most valuable investment & kitchen cabinets should be built to last.

IKEA's modern style doesn't fit everyone's design sense, so I haven't had many clients use them, but the one client that used them were quite happy with the quality (so far - 2 years) and definitely fit their budget.

If you do a little bit research on Houzz you will find many Threads in the past regarding Ikea kitchens. We have Ikea 15 minutes away from our house but I went with a local cabinet maker when renovating my own kitchen. In the end there was not a big difference in the cost. Good luck

I have been using Ikea cabinets in my design for 20 years and most of those kitchens are still up and functioning well, there is nothing wrong with particle board boxes and in some instances they are preferable to plywood because they are more stable. Ikea 's has a great warranty because they have been around for a long time and honor that warranty. In the kitchens i have installed over the years my clients have had 3 or 4 warranty issues that were resolved in a matter of hours by Ikea. I was told that the new line should be available this late spring early summer, it is going to be great because it will have more sizes and also some new storage ideas. The picture I have sent is a kitchen that is now 13 yrs. old and still looks like new. Any kitchen will start showing it's age at 10-12 yrs. they get a lot of action.

I would strongly advise getting a copy of the current edition of Consumer Reports, the independent magazine that tests and rates products. Unlike decorating magazines that depend on cabinet companies and other manufacturers to exist, Consumer Reports refuses to accept ANY advertising so it is objective with its tests and rating.

The current edition is focused on the home, including cabinets, appliances, siding , flooring, etc.

The magazine doesn't have preconceived favorite brands, nor are they trying to sell brands or products.

It does not rate specific brands of cabinetry, but it does point out features and materials to look for and also to avoid.

You have a design issue and an installation issue.
A good designer would have caught this. A good installer would have noticed the issue from the drawings and at least at the time of installation. If discovered at time of installation all work should have stopped and the issue should have been addressed at that time.
Your cabinets can be fixed without changing the size of the cabinets. It will require some custom hacks and will take an experienced installer.

In my opinion IKEA makes very good products at fantastic prices. The final product is a direct reflection of the time and talent used in the assembly.
Take your time and assemble the furniture correctly. If the assembly is out of your comfort zone, then hire a professional to do it for you.

We did one at our cottage. It was fantastic! Tons of people using it including renters. Such a great deal! Building a new home now would consider it for laundry room, powder rooms downstairs etc. No hesitation to hire a pro to istall.
