Granite being part of the style, could you incorporate granite benchtops, splashbacks and stone floors. A pic in the link above also shows granite half pillars at the front door. Granite rocks could be placed in the garden. The article mentions the Japanese influence of the time, perhaps you could incorporate that with a sliding wood and paper (or modern opaque material) screen wall that moves to make two rooms into one when desired.
