Help with living room

I need help pulling my living room all together. I don't know what to add to finish it off and give it that cohesion. Tricky bits are having the two white doors at the end of the room and a large glass sliding door to the left.

Any ideas?

I agree with the comments about the rug placement. I would bring in some more texture and color. The window is an odd shape and size. Is this a basement room? I would shop clearance tables at a fabric store. Find a simple pattern (stripes in 3 monochromatic colors to compliment sofa - maybe a chocolate, olive, tan theme). Build a simple valance box above the window, cover with padding and the new fabric, and add a simple 18" wide panel of the same fabric on each side (attach to inside of valance) and let it hang all the way to within an inch of the floor.

Hi! The first move I would make would be to put the rug partially under the couch. This will really help with cohesion. the second thing I would would be to purchase a coffee table. I cannot tell if your couch is dark brown or black, so I have attached two:

Yes, move the rug so it is under the front feet of your sectional. There is a lot of wall to fill behind the couch under the windows.....why not hang the pics we can see on the white shelving unit there. Then can THAT unit go under the tv? That will give more presence to the tv in the room.

Warner, that was my first thought as well, placing the rug under the sofa (on both sides of it.)

IF you are nervous about hanging the pictures, you can either tape them off or trace them on newspaper and hang the paper and then post to get a yay or a nay. Have fun! GREAT room!!!

Abbyjean, I was thinking of getting one of those really skinny picture shelves from ikea and putting that under the window to put my pictures up. Might be a bit less scary than putting lots of holes in the wall!

I don't see any comments about the overall darkness of the room. Between the large dk couch, the dark rug and few light sources, the room seems cloistered. The windows are small so I would suggest a couple of torchieres that have light throughout the entire lamp. If you're renting, perhaps you could still talk your landlord into a light shade of paint in your favorite color, not brown :)
