Memories!! My daughter loved a fort and we always made it in her brother's room, because the room was larger. Somehow, we tied a sheet at the foot of the bed, and stretched it across to the desk to create a floor space to play on. Now, she has a daughter who loves building forts using those popular building materials - every cushion in the sofa!

I never did growing up, but when my children were young on long winter days, they used sofa cushions and extra sheets to make forts. What fun they had. I can remember a neighbor visiting and being horrified at the "mess" the children were encouraged to make!

No photos, but I used to build forts with the cushions of the sofa in the basement - not allowed in the living room upstairs. I'd also put a sheet over the kitchen table to create a tent. I was also lucky enough to have a real child sized tent and wigwam in the back yard to play with. I remember once watching the Superbowl with my grandfather on the TV in the basement, he sat at one end of the couch and I watched from inside my cushion fort at the other end. We ate fried egg sandwiches and it was so fun!

Yes! such great memories. Growing up ,My brothers and sisters and I would always build a Fort/Tent almost every week. Sometimes we used our kitchen table , sheets and blankets and other times we used the sofa and chairs that were available. Fun, fun, fun. The best part was, we never got in trouble for doing it! We sure had a lot of fun back in the day! Outside, we even built hut/houses out of sticks and straw that we could actually sit in. Small wonders.

Our mum would help us build forts using everything and anything. My brother was the best at it though. He could build a whole kingdom in the lounge. Then mum would sit and tell us stories of magic and mystery. She was a memory creator and man was it fun.

When we get iced in and can't leave the house I give the kids free reign to build tents and caves all over the den. It keeps them occupied for hours. I have to make sure they start using the blankets and quilts as sleds. They'll pull each other around the floor and into furniture and always end up with "rug burns" of some sorts. When they get quiet, I check on them and they are either reading or asleep!

Making a path through the house with pillows and cushions was a great adventure to avoid getting in the water with crocodiles or dragons. (the spaces between the cushions) Spacing some of the cushions far apart added challenging jumps to avoid the croc's. There were kid created techniques to rescue a sib or friend if they weren't able to make the wide leaps. Singing "Never Smile at a Crocodile" from Peter Pan was also a valuable tool for survival. Great fun.

Yes...my 9 year old still loves to make pillow forts. Yes it drives me a bit crazy to see the mess...but he has so much fun so why not! We made them all the time when we were kids too.

we have designed tree houses; also bedrooms with sleeping lofts for kids, seriously having fun doing it !! I will have to look for some images to post.

....We had a Bergere sofa and arm chairs, which was fantastic as the cushions were not only huge; they also consisted of firmer ones for the backs and bottoms and a whole heap of larger ones on top, hence enabling me to construct some pretty amazing indoor camps! And like Rachels', my Mum used to make up incredible stories about encroaching Indians and wolves...she even howled......as I was installed safely in my camp! Still, according to Mum, we had to make it across the river to be safe, so the scenario would then continue into bathtime, where, after a mad swim with the wolves howling and the indians hollering behind me, I would make it safely ashore! Wonderful memories! Later on, my best friend Annie and I built an underground tunnel camp in the woods, complete with camouflaged trapdoor and niches in the inner walls for candles etc! Great until an unaware off trail rider fell into it with his horse! Both were fine although we were told to deconstruct and fill in all our hard digging work! I I guess we must unwittingly have used rotten pine logs for the roof! Hat in Andalusia x

I made forts out of anything, but our couch didn't have detachable cushions when I was a kid. . .my kids though make forts with our couch every second day, and make a bounce structure or path on the off day. It drives my husband nuts, but I'm use to it.

As a child, building forts was one of my favorite things to do. I had more fun "designing" and building my elaborate forts, rather than actually playing in them. I would scrounge around the house…or in the woods….or on the beach….looking for items to decorate each room. Repurposing found objects was always the best….Swiss Family Robinson style. After reading everyone's comments, it's clear that building forts allows kids the opportunity to be creative, resourceful and most importantly….a designer!

I use to take every mop handle or broom I could find and tuck them in behind the mattress and the get my Moms big sheets and tie them at the top of each pole-handle and then pull the sheet down to the end of the bed and weigh the sheet at the end with anything that I could find. It was a sheet tent. My Mom would let us play all day like that and sometimes even sleep in them. Fun memories !

My mom bought us some kind of "ready made" canvas sheet that was intended to BE a pillow fort...It was preprinted to look like a little white house, with roof tiles, window boxes and an opening flap that looked like a door. It was sized to fit a standard card table. It had a wooden dowel stuck into a base for "raising the roof". Wow, I haven't thought about that thing forever! It probably would today sell for megabucks at an antique store/flea market. ( I see our old stuff all the time at antique stores...and I'm not THAT old...! I'm a flowerchild of the 60's)
