Flar lighting, the TV is planned to be moved (once we get the cable guys out to move it) into the playroom/den which is through the doorway right of the foyer.

Since I am going the "buy new furniture" route, do you think I should get two sofas or love seats facing eachother, or stick with the idea of a sofa and two chairs? Also, I am working with a clean slate so, what is the most ideal furniture configuration? I could get two love seats and put one below the small window and another facing it, or stick with a full size sofa along the long wall and put two chairs facing it or another sofa facing it. Thanks for your help!

No. :) All new furniture, rug. I'm starting completely from scratch which in a way is wonderful but also very scary!

Which one of the sofas is the most comfortable? I love the look of a Chesterfield, but it isn't always the most comfy sofa.
Do you have a floorplan of your room? Could be a simple drawing, with doors, windows and sizes. I can try and make one or more furniture layout plans if you like.
A sofa and two chairs is the most flexible option. But let's just start with a floorplan. Then you'll have a good idea of what you could be shopping for.
Will you be keeping the chaise in your room? I love the shape of it.

Would you consider round? It will mirror the shape of the sofa and open up floor space which will, in turn, open up the room...........

I like the grey one better,colour wise.

The rug does give a crowded appearance to the space. Instead, you could just keep the wood floors plain or have a smaller less decorated rug, something of one or two colors only perhaps. You could also put a glass coffee table, or a wood one, and put a bright eye catching centerpiece on it to brighten up the room and bring a fresher look.

Either sofa would work. The devil is in the details: chairs, rug, art...

Sorry clutteredval! haha, can't please everyone, I suppose :) It was vintage but pretty worn looking. Plus, it would stain horribly where my toddler would drool, spill milk, etc and so it just wasn't very practical. I decided I'd rather pass it along to a home who could keep better care of it and give it the love it deserved :) Not a fan of that rug from pottery barn. Were you thinking living room or dining room? I am thinking for living room I'll go with a sisal/jute rug and then a vintage kilim (lots on etsy) to overlay. The kilim will possibly have lots of bright colors including pink/fuscia. I'm thinking of painting both rooms white a-la Emily Henderson... my current favorite. Maybe getting rid of the blue ottoman- even though I just bought it :) I'm realizing after living with these rooms for a couple of months now that I don't love the blue/teal so much. Ahhhh, anyway, as you can see it's a major work in progress still and I'm also still trying to nail down the "layout" of both rooms :)

out of the 4 pictures you posted, both of the ones on the right are my favorite, i wouldnt change a thing, except to add two rugs. love the big chair in the corner, and the ottoman looks great. the dining are is just perfect! i think you dont like the ottoman color because of the wall color, so if you are going to paint, i would do that first before changing the ottoman or buying any rugs............can we see the family room now lol.

Thanks! Good point about the paint. I want the space to feel light bright and airy which is why I am currently favoring white. If I can find a reasonably priced black and white cow hide i would love to layer on jute forking room. Will post pics of the family room soon!

Hi again :-) I love what you've done! And the wall colour is beautiful! I know I said I like the previous colour, but that was with the green sofa. This looks so fresh and light and happy. Love your dining area. Are you happy with how you changed the functions of your rooms?

Thanks carolins! The living room is painted owl gray (BM) and dining room is Wythe Blue (BM). I love the new configuration. Such a great idea. This makes entertaining really nice because we can have our adult time in the front dining/living room and the older kids can watch a movie in the family room, while the younger kids are in the playroom. So, everyone has their own little area to hang out. The only space I'm still figuring out is the foyer in between the dining and living room. It's a huge open swath that is hard to fill because the view when you open the front door is split in half between a little 50" piece of wall and a doorway into the family room. So, centering a circular table there looks strangely split. I will probably end up just putting something like a little chest or table where the 50" piece of wall is with a vase of flowers and a pretty picture above.

That Wythe Blue is gorgeous. Chest with piece of art above sounds like a good plan. Once you've found a rug for your living area the 'foyer' won't look so large.
Or... you could put a rug only in your foyer to define that space.

Yes, I thought about just adding a rug in the foyer but I think the living room looks especially naked as is. Dining room, I care less about having a rug to attract crumbs and food.

What about a coordinating runner from the front door?

I have been following your thread and I love your white sofa and blue ottoman. It is so peaceful looking. I like how the blue in the dining room picks up the ottoman color. I know it took some courage and money to buy everything new. If you want to change the ottoman, maybe you could have the material changed in the future. It looks soft and cozy for the children and they will not hurt themselves on the corners. I also see that you carried the blue from the front rooms into the family room rug. Have fun with your home!

Thanks so much! That was my thought process behind the ottoman. It is very child friendly. I will try to work with it before I get rid of it. I'm realizing it's a major process and some mistakes will be made along the way but I'd rather regroup and learn from them than have to live with something I don't love! You noticed the blue in the family room! I was trying to do more of a whole house color scheme, as things were looking a bit disjointed from room to room. Nancy, I did think about a runner- although it would have to pretty much be a full size rug, as the "foyer" is about 7' wide by 15' long.

Don't get rid of the ottoman, it's lovely! Just put a large rectangular tray on it so it can function as a table.


I like your idea of a natural fiber rug, layered with another one, in the living area. I think that if you add red/pink/orange/fuchsia touches to your room that you'll start to love the teal/blue too.

Looks like it's about the same colour as your rattan chairs, so it could work. Always difficult to see true colours on screen.

OK- the chairs are on their way out. They were actually on my front porch but I pulled them in as placeholders. Still thinking about what will work well. I would really like to see some shelving in the living room- on either wall, and the sofa pulled out from against the wall somehow. I thought maybe I could do shelving on one wall and then a long console on the other with table lamps. Maybe switch to a love seat and two chairs and angle them within the room. I could easily put the white ikea sofa in my playroom (I need seating there anyway). I have a little rattan loveseat that I bought for my backyard deck last weekend. It has a matching chair. I am thinking of trying that out in the living room for scale to see how I like it. My work is never done lol!

love the rug. love the chair and the twig and the corner. the dresser looks like a dresser....all i can think to say about it.

Flair, IMO, the dresser looks like a sideboard.

blovebug, nice colorful space. A bit frenetic, though. Too much small stuff, I think. Try flipping the position of the wicker chair and side table. I think I'd like that big chair back in front of the window corner better.

I looked again and think you could just simplify the top of the sideboard a bit. Keep the turquoise vase and the pink flowers and the lamp; play with the other stuff or maybe just remove it. Calm it down a bit.

Got it! Thanks so much everyone! I'll try moving the wicker chair- it's covering up a roof view but I can always try it. I saw the long piece as more of a credenza/sideboard than dresser. it's really long.

People are AFRAID to pull the furniture away from the walls!! This carpet is a muddy color but the wall colors are fabulous and the two tones are just what I did in my large kitchen to brighten the shady side and used a darker neutral on the sunny side of the room because it could handle it. Your two sofas- NOT GOOD they each have too much character. I would use the sofa in the TV side and stage the lounge chair in the foyer side. A good club chair with a table and lamp or floor lamp should go in the window recess. It will be useful as a reading nook and look very good. We all have the problem where do we put those big TV's!? Move furniture around and then when you are finished buy that simple simple rug in a neutral color- maybe even sisal but make sure it is soft (not too chunky) or the kids won't sit on it. I had that problem 20 years ago when they were first popular. Sorry but I don't know how to show you visuals. the wall with the TV could look like the one you show with all the objects and art but try a chinese prayer table in black. There should always be something black in a well designed room! Picture frames, chair, piano, coffee table etc. Just one thing. the gallery wall you show could look very good on that TV wall and don't feel inhibited. You can even go down around the tv table to the floor and up to the ceiling! As long as you have balance in the weight of the objects just pretend the TV and the window are art!! Good luck. thanks fido1231. Did you see the most recent updates? Look from the bottom up. Muddy rug has been replaced with the diamond pattern cream rug and TV was moved to a different room.

......just sayin'. that doesnt mean i dont like it. perhaps, the lamp and such draw me more to dresser..... maybe art instead of a mirror. and possibly less is more on top... i do like the idea of the end table and chair flip. PS I love the family room rug!

Add a coffee table and curtains

If you are going to do anything with that mirror just remember that shiny lacquer paint in a good color like a soft charcoal or some color that pops in the room would work and is very in style. Check out Elle Decor.
