I've been thinking valances this whole time, but someone just suggested to me drapery panels- actually using painter's drop cloth as drapes? Just decorative ones- never to be pulled closed…. Is that a good idea? We have big dogs and small children, so long drapes signals problems to me- dogs sitting on them, toddlers pulling on them…

I vote for simple beige roman shades or simple fabric shades.

Conrad natural woven shades. Beautiful look, adds warmth without feeling too heavy. If too pricy, try wood blinds that match the wood.

Beige??? Why not red? Or a plaid with red? Is there a wild flower color on your property that woos you? I am having trouble deciphering what is going on above the kitchen window casements? Please clarify or take a closer picture please! And the blue stone of the fireplace, is this in another room than the breakfast table? Now that I am on a roll (!) why do the wall colors look so drastically different ?

The color of the logs look different b/c of lighting. They logs are pine. Our kitchen cabinets are reclaimed chestnut. It's an open floor plan, all the rooms flow into each other. The fireplace stone is just in the family room.

Andrew Graham interior: do you think a silk check/ plaid with some sheen to it is too fancy? That's what I've been drawn to- maybe b/c it would provide some contrast to our monotone color palate and the rough/ dull texture on the logs.

Some valance examples I've been thinking of. Maybe in a check/ plaid that has ivory/ cream background and red, blue to bring out the small red, blue specks in the rug...???

I think panels would be a good idea...to break up the expanse of wood. Framing the windows to your views.

Yippee love the red! No need to bring every color into the valences ( i.e. blue). Your logs are unique from standard interiors and beautiful. No over-the-top in-your-face sheen! Consider a material that has both visual color interest & texture. The red/creme plaid stokes the first and for texture consider a subtle moire background to your plaid or a rough linen or rough silk. I think you are on a roll. :) Remember its YOUR home! You your intuition! Enjoy!

I like the idea of red valances in a log cabin. They're fitting and enhance the rustic look.

Hi everyone, I am looking for feedback on the valance fabrics I found. (Real camera broke when baby knocked it from my hand, so these are primitive camera photos). Family Room: a red/ brown/ cream "striped" tribal/ native american print; will be a scalloped valance on decorative black rod. For the kitchen & dining room: a bird print on cream background; will be flat valances with hidden continental rod.

Very nice choices and perfect for your log home. The birds are cheerful without being cutesy. I would try to raise the curtain to cover the frame but not the window, so you don't block the light or view.

I think your fabrics are appropriate and fun, but I would not do valances. They are a bit like fake shutters to me. I think window coverings should at least appear to be functional, so I would do roman or tie-up shades.

Thanks for feedback. Groveraxle- what about the idea that some things are meant to be decorative vs. functional? Originally I thought I wanted window treatments to provide femininity to our home, but I have somewhat altered that to wanting a finished feel. And to provide contrast to all our wood. I don't know if the family room fabric is too busy though. The logs themselves are busy- with all the grain marks, knots, color variation, curved and stacked texture.
I understand personal preferences, obviously- that's what's makes the world go round! I just want to avoid a busy look. Going for a clean, finished look. Others have recommended Native American print fabric. I like that idea...

The wood work is too nice to add valances. Look at a simple white roller. Get privacy and still allow light. To add a valance or harsh colours you lose the grain and natural beauty of the home.

I like the native style fabric. Looks good as a valance. Not so much the birds. It has a 50's vibe to me. IMHO
My only concern with valances...having lived with quite a few ....is that they don't seem to have very much presence and end up looking skimpy.

mwolfe- I get that, about not much presence/ skimpiness… I wonder if panel drapes in the native fabric would look good in a log home. I always think of panel drapes as so formal… Still a work in progress-- going for a finished look…

My suggestion is to make sure you don't take light from your rooms by placing any covering into the window area.
Hang the fabric above the windows and have it JUST hide the top of the widow frame.
My vote is a textured linen.
Repeat what ever fabric you use in very large....20x20 down alternative pillows. This way the window area looks thought out and not just "I wanted to put something over my windows."
Log homes are tricky in that they need texture in fabrics, rugs, bedding etc. to hold there own with the logs.
That is what makes there look homey and comfy.
