Perhaps the reason you don't have a ton or responses is that your rooms are so beautiful that it is really hard to improve on them. I have had the same living room for over 15 years, and although I really love it, I feel it needs a change, but keep putting it off as it is so comfortable for me. My suggestions is that you stay with the similar colors but sort of tone them down. There is a big contrast between the white ceiling and the red and yellow walls. You might want to consider creating a kind of Old European or Tuscany look, but more subdued walls in the living room, maybe a mottled brick color and then a similar mottled gold look in the kitchen but with cream ceilings so the contrast is less noticeable. You could change the couch to a very light slipcover, add a beautiful antique style landscape over the fireplace with a gold frame, recover some of the books in the bookcase with antique looking red leather book covers and add some gorgeous painted Italian or French painted plates on the walls. Beautiful home kcase! If you're really wanting a new color scheme, I'm with Lena...go gray. The stone fireplace, sofa, area rug and kitchen cabinets are major components in both rooms that are calling for gray. You could even do one shade of gray in the living room and another shade in the kitchen -- in keeping with the two-tone theme you currently have. Or do one shade throughout. Here's a couple of "go gray" suggestions for you to ponder. :)

Since you're fond of the warm tones in red and yellow, you would need to consider grays that carry warm hues -- that is, if grays interest you.

Keep the red looks great.

Thank you all so much, I am encouraged by your comments. The couch is dated but even 17 years later it is the most comfortable couch I have ever sat on so one day we may re-upholster. Janet the cabinets are a cool olive green. The red is a brick red which I have pulled from the couch. The couch has a bone color with blues and reds and pinks. The reason I went dark in the living room is to make it more cozy because of all the windows . . . my husband hates curtains and there is little wall space so I went dramatic. I have thought of grays for the living room but what about the kitchen - any ideas?

How about french gray in the living room and limewhite in the kitchen. I've just painted our office french gray and it has that warm but classy look. another great combo could be elephant's Breath and skimming Stone :-)

How about a beige, taupe or beige/green for the kitchen. I'm going on the color of the cabinets, which appear to be black in the photos, but you mentioned above that they are a dark olive green.

Thanks Thomas . . . I really like the warmth of the Behr Perfect Taupe. The cabinets are a green - I think its another reason that the red works so well. With the large windows the green from outside seems to compliment the green cabinets/red walls. But I like the idea of black cabinets . . . hmmm.

kcase...I did try to come up with some new color ideas that had "warmth" to them because it's obvious that you love warmer colors! I think the yellow walls in your kitchen also bring out the olive green in the cabinets. Changing the wall color might actually create a new contrast that causes the cabinets to appear more black. Hmmmmm.....that is something to think about.
