Chandelier Conundrum

I need to replace my chandelier. I have to keep table and chairs. Any ideas? I'd like to transform this room into a more "coastal living" type room. I'm not sure I can pull it off with the furniture I have to work with. We are on the river in Florida, I would love to paint the walls a nautical navy blue. But according to some houzz experts it may not work. So struggling with paint and lighting! Aagh!

Blue is a color that cuts the appetite - great for dieters. I wouldn't paint the walls with it, but here is a selection of fabric from ARKfabric.com that will blend blue with green for a very soothing room. Paint your chairs white or palest ivory and upholster them in the green geometric. Use the paisley for drapery panels hung floor to ceiling. Take your cue from the other solids for the wall paint - I like Sherwin Williams Coastal Plane 6192. Lighten the stair railings and add a beachy chandelier and beach or seascape paintings.

I wouldn't do the whole room blue, maybe one accent wall (the one with the window?). I had never heard about blue cutting the appetite, that's something to consider for sure!!

I would agree with bringing in blue/green accents with fabrics, adding some seashells and other "beachy" decor. Not sure if you can cover the chairs as I've never used slipcovers, but possibly using white slipcovers?

Hi. Yes, you can achieve this.

I would

1) Paint the walls something like BM Woodlawn Blue, which will nicely complement your hall color.
2) Paint the ceiling the hall color
3) Paint railing white or cream
4) Paint dr chairs white or cream (this is optional)
5) re-upholster dr chairs
6) New chandelier (love the ones decoenthusiaste posted)

Which chandelier would look best? Trying to tie in with the stair banister....

If you're after a more "coastal living" look, you might consider changing the stair railing to fit the image. I certainly wouldn't let the stair dictate the chandy, as the stairs are very 1950's glam, not coastal.

I like the chandelier on the right. As far as the stair railing, you could always paint the railing in lieu of replacing.

I'm glad someone likes that chandelier on the right. The dimensions are 42 x 41" and my table is 80" x 40". Do you think the light is too big?

Thank goodness you asked about the navy walls before you painted! Don't worry about trying to match banisters with a chandelier. Neither of the fixtures above look costal.

Love the Coastal Plain color above. Please consider that for your walls.

Think of a plain drum style chandelier to lighten the room.

Also, consider recovering the chairs with a lighter, brighter fabric. That seems to be what's making your room so dark and not beachy. Use a different but coordinating fabric on the backs of the chairs.

Did you see the picture from Siesta Key above- I am trying to duplicate that look with the chandelier. So you're right- more traditional than coastal I guess- but looking at the entire house - it has a few coastal elements that I love! The chandelier looks beautiful with the bright blue chairs.

A 40" wide table will look best with a light that is half to 3/4 of its width, so 20-30" is more like it. The point is that people don't feel comfortable with something hanging over their heads. Chandy should leave space all around the table for place settings that are out from under it. So, we will use Spice Bay Siesta Key as your inspiration. Then, the chancy on the right will work (if the size works). It is so open and smaller on the bottom, we may be able to "cheat" a little. Also, your room is open concept.

How large is the chandelier you have in there now?
Also, with the current chandelier, what is the distance from the top of table to bottom of chandelier?

Going back to "Spice Bay", if you want to keep things light and airy, what do you think of:

1) Painting the room the same color as the hall
2) Painting only the ceiling a blue
3) Recovering the chairs the blue you like

And- I am having to ditch my original chandelier ideas as those are too big. So I'm looking around again. My table is only 40" so I need something around 28". Your ideas with the paint have me thinking crystal chandelier with turquoise accents--- wonder if one is out there?

Yes, walls painted same as hall and ceiling painted at Lucia or similar will be stunning!

1st find fabric for chairs
Then choose exact ceiling paint

Also, could you please give us exact table size? It is 40 x what?

Crystal chandelier would work since you are going coastal but not totally.

My table is 79" x 40". The chandelier in my photo (that I am taking down) is 34"x 30". Really appreciate your help!

I recommend Ben Moore Wickham Gray which is a beautiful soothing color, or Night Mist.

Hi. Thanks. I would consider a rectangular chandelier. It will give you a more updated feel and fit your table much better.

Also new chandy bottom should be 30" from top of table. Current one looks too high.

You want your chandy to be about 1/2 -2/3 the size of your table. With your table approximately 80 x40, you should consider something between 40x20 at the smaller end and 52 x 26 at the larger end.

So, you want the chandelier itself to have blue accents? That would be nice.....only thing is that this limits your future flexibility.

Also, since the dining room is so open, what are the other fixtures in the area like? Are you going to keep them? You have to consider that. They don't have to match, but they have to coordinate.

Paint looks great together in my opinion. Spent hours pouring over pics for rectangular chandeliers last night. I'm going to a local light store today. Also see if I can find some fabric. If you come across any lights that may work let me know!

I'll add pics if the other rooms for you to see. I think you are right about the blue accents on chandy- don't need them since they will be limiting.
So these are pics of how the house was decorated before we bought it. I added the outside so you can get a feel for the big picture!

The siesta key picture has a light airy quality to it with darker wood ones in the table and the chairs grounding the space and the blue upholstery giving it a jolt of fresh color without overwhelming it.
If you want to replicate that the wall color needs to hav some cool undertones to it. Stay away from beiges and browns even if you paint he ceiling blue. Whites would work well with the railing or cool greys.

Lasa, I agree. That green mount silk I posted above looks like it has some brown in it, but the color on your hall walls, emily, doesn't. Colors online are challenging.

The paint color comes last anyway. You need to choose art and upholstery color first. I would consider a mirror for one of the walls and a large piece of art for the other.

Paint: As far as the greenmount silk, yes I will see if I can get some better pictures- it has a greenish undertone to it. I will work on paint after I find the perfect blue for the chairs and go from there. I just hope cool undertones will work with the greenmount silk in the other adjacent rooms.

The Chandelier is too high over the table, 30 to 36 inches over the table. I see that you where trying to match the chandelier with the railing. Add a rug under the table to make the floor and chairs so heavy. Paint the walls blue it is only paint. Add some pictures to make it seem more lived in.

Cdr design I agree with you paint should be last. Emilynee I would suggest going to the local paint store they can help you pick colors with cool undertones. Even greenish colors can have a brown undertone which would give it a warm tone. Good luck!! Would love to see your after pictures

Love the rectangular chandy and the Woodlawn Blue color, above! The current room is too dark. I also think, imho, you could paint the stair railing and walls an of-white like the table top. Perhaps do an accent wall after picking out your fabric for the chairs. A general rule is that vibrant colors such as red and orange spike the appetite whereas the cooler ones such as green and blue do not. Good luck!!!

I too love that Woodlawn Blue color, but I know you like the more vibrant color, Emily. In the end, whatever fabric or art you fall in love with will dictate paint color. A lot of good choices posted above and there are enough paint colors available to make your head spin.

Thanks, patagni, I like the idea of painting the stairs an off white to match the table. If anyone has any other upholstery ideas lemme know. I'm not stuck on the bright blue although it sure looks awesome in that Siesta Key picture.

I have greenmount silk (benjamin moore) in all adjacent rooms-- just found this color by Sherwin Williams- SW6239 Upward. It is a blue/grey color that will look good with the greenmount silk I think. I'll post a picture of adjacent rooms, although ignore art and furniture as it is all changing.

I think this will be an easier color work with and carry throughout the house.

The St. Lucia Skies is more jewel-tone. This is more earthy and less saturated.
