Shar - I'm going to suggest that you head away from granite and go look at also using some element with a lighter counter. It is a little more modern to use - maybe a quartz instead of a stone -which the spicy orange is kind of speaking to me about. Consider some butcherblock or plank to match the light oak floor - on an island if you have it and then it might be easier do the rest in the dark. Dark counters really suck a lot of light out of a kitchen - I love contrast, but the rich woods you have might sing beautifully against a creamy stone or quartz

or even look at a mid-tone warm gray quartz that wouldn't be black or brown but work with both. That tone is going to be tricky with the wood so make sure you have a door sample with you when you shop. As for backsplash, that is always the challenge when you go dark - what to do there. You might do some modern spicy orange glass 3 x 12 tile just behind the stainless stove, and use the same material but in a quiet and classic tone everywhere else.

If you went for a creamy quartz, and creamy backsplash plus that splash of orange, remember that you can add back black bowls, appliances, linens . . . but your counters and work space would be a bit more light and bright.

I like that idea, I wish the rest of the area was not spicy orange, as I really wanted to incorporate some red. I am on my way to look for orange glass!!
