It's been my experience that IF you know a certain piece of furniture, textiles or art work will go back into a space you're re-doing, you probably will want to take those known objects into consideration before selecting paint and other finishes.

it is basically a blank slate, I don't have any item as of yet to determine the color palate, I guess I should maybe start looking at bedding?

It's always helpful to have a general color palette in mind, but customizing a paint color to coordinate with your bedding or existing furniture is less time consuming and more economical that searching high and low for that "perfect" fabric.

When choosing colors in general, and specifically for a bedroom, I prefer soothing, serene colors in a tertiary palette. This means that primary colors are not a consideration (as might be used in a nursery), secondary colors are still too strong, so tertiary (using more white and black) to a color create more soothing, subtle colors. These colors are often very muted, subtle, neutral, easy to "wake up to" colors.
