Marble comes from Calacatta, Italy (not Calcutta, that's a city in India which has no marble industry). Only use marble after kitchen-testing an offcut with blueberry jam, salad dressing, red wine, lemon juice, fresh basil, coffee, and tea and banging some pots and utensils down on it.

Way too much maintance! I would advise against it.

Please, marble has been used for centuries as counter top. In Italy you will find ruins that still have marble counters laying in the space. I think Carrara marble is one of the most beautiful marbles for counters and Calacatta is similar but usually with a little heavier veining. Calacatta is usually more expensive also. As with any other counter wipe up spills and don't chop on it (hard on your knives) and try not to drop heavy stuff on it.
