I love slipper tubs but they usually are not that short.

Honestly, you need to go and try potential tubs out---take them for a test-drive. This is too important of a choice to take a chance on : )

Look for a good salesroom that carries a number of tubs. Even if it means going for a drive to another town or city...

Some that look attractive are too upright for me. I can't soak without scrunching down in a lying down position. So many tubs are designed for people sitting up, bent at the hips. Maybe for you, but not for me! Watch out for the angle of the back-portion of tubs you might choose!

Another pitfall can be a too narrow tub. You need room to turn and get on your knees to exit the tub. Some look great, but are too narrow for practical use. Length isn't the only issue. If you see a very low price---pay attention to the tub's width.

Also, I've seen some "cheaper" models that had the overflow drain cut so low the tub couldn't hold an adequate depth of water! I never would have realized this without seeing it in person (and sitting in it). Probably cut was a mistake (and hence the price)...

BTW, I recommend acrylic, not cast iron. You read that you need cast iron to hold the water temperature. I never found this to be true. Cast iron is more expensive and heavy for installation. Acrylic (or other non-cast iron material) looks good and works fine.

I had a great tub (different house) that was about 5' 6" Claw foot (no longer made I'm sorry to say---I tried to find it for the next house). Comfortable AND looked great. It can be done! But, it is a search!

Only wish I had a brand to recommend…. (what you asked for)

Thanks so much Sally. Great points to consider. One of the reasons I'm leaning toward cast iron is that it's a first floor bathroom with radiant hot water heat. The heating unit will be right behind the tub. I understand that this will radiate heat into the room via the tub. I live in a rural area and having a hard time finding showrooms with an array of tubs to try on. Anybody know of such a place in the Detroit area? Thanks again.
