Hello glowworm -- Here's how your charming home would look with charcoal black shutters and storm/front door. I think it allows the beautiful detail of your columns to stand out. Whatever you choose, I'd recommend the same color on the storm and actual door -- two different colors looks choppy.

I agree with Barnhart Gallery. Stick with the same color on both doors. I like the way the black doors with the black shutters, as Barnhart so artfully crafted above, lets the white trim and red brick stand out. Beautiful curb appeal. Nice work!

Actually, LOL, I was looking for a black door to paste onto your entry and this off-black was the best match I could find for the angle of your door -- either would work.

So much potential for your main entrance! But don't do the storm door thing! They never ever look good, no matter how many lites they have! I like the idea of painting your front door black and adding black shutters to your window (but make the shutters the full length of the window plus the panel below). You have a lot of symmetry going on and I think you should go full throttle with it. Remove the chair and the 2 odd sized planters and get 2 big urns or planters for either side of your door. And make them beefy, you have the room for them. I would also update your lighting with something more current, maybe in stainless steel. And finally, remove your house numbers from above the door, buy new larger scale stainless steel numbers and hang them on the wall where the chair currently sits. Good luck!

Actually, BArnhart Gallery got the shutter size correct... Only the length of the actual window and half the width of the window. Liking the black.

Dark colors will hold the heat, so if you get a lot of sun along with a storm door, your paint will fade quickly, will also be hard to hang a wreath. I would skip the storm myself. Love the black!

I was wondering about that myself Patricia. Wasn't sure if the shutters should extend to the bottom of the wood trim - which goes down a few feet below window.

If I went with a different color, besides black, on the door would the shutters need to match the door? I heard once that you shouldn't get too many colors involved. Any thoughts on wood vs vinyl or aluminum shutters?

Love the look that Barnhart Gallery rendered for you! The only recommendation that we have is that you place radius top shutters on the window. As the shutters already make an impact, they will make even more of an impact if they are properly fitted and properly styled for the window! Barnhart Gallery did get the sizing right, as each shutter should measure out to half the size of the window.

As far as wood vs vinyl or aluminum, we of course have to side with wooden shutters. Wooden shutters are more durable and the color lasts longer on wood. We use three different types of wood that we use including Western Red Cedar, Spanish Cedar and Mahogany.

Our wooden shutters are all handcrafted and our wood is cautiously hand-selected and kiln-dried to prevent expansion and contraction in different types of weather. Our wooden shutters are also not made with screws (vinyl and aluminum are), which enhances their ability to stay hanging for a longer period of time.

No we left the inside of the door an off white color because that is what all of our woodwork is inside. But I have seen it done both ways. Just a matter of preference I think.

I disagree with Janethumphreys... a storm door can look very elegant. I do not live in a huge fancy house, but I live in a very affluent area, and although some homes do not have storms, some do, and they look great. Very polished. You just have to make sure it all looks great together, like the one in the picture. Plus, if you are in and out of your house a lot during the day, it's easier to sometimes leave the big entry door open, and push a thin storm out of the way, than to have to keep opening the main entry door all the time. Also, for people with kids having the storm there allows you to hear and see better what is going on outside. Plus, I don't think the original posters question was if she should or shouldn't have a storm door...

If you are painting the door black, get a black storm door. However, keep all the trim around the door white for contrast.

I have the same dilemma white storm or black? I have black shutters. This is being built and the surround will be all white with black sconces. Also including a mailbox with post. White or black??
