Range versus oven/cooktop

Obviously price is the big point here. I have a 10x10 kitchen and would really like a separate cook top and oven for the looks. I hate the grungy edge where the range and countertop meet. Are there any other benefits to a separate cooktop and over over a range.?

Don't know what you mean by grungy edge but my range has a lip that sits on top of the countertop. Cooking spills/splashes are not hard to clean so it never gets grungy. Range and countertop are 9 years old.

That's what I want! I meant the stuff that invariably slides down in between. I haven't bought a range in eons so it looks like a few improvements have been made in the last 20 years. :-)
