How did you get rid of/cover up that wood paneling? My basement looks just like that room and I'm looking for ideas.

why did the fire stove go? It was the one thing I would keep.

Ayana... we stripped it ALL OFF... back to the studs and drywalled where we needed to. I was originally just going to drywall over it, but this was the best move budget-wise!

It was a gas fire... and it was on it's last legs. We first replaced the glass... $300... then the fan... $200... then the fan went again... and I said no more. It was like a blast furnace - too much heat for a small room. When we pulled it out, we found that it wasn't installed correctly, and had started a fire behind the wall. Burnt black and crispy cedar - against the studs... we were so lucky it didn't burn the whole house down. I decided that since we were renting the place out... an electric fireplace would be a better choice!

I know it's not "top end"... but it is very warm, very relaxing and SAFE! We ended up spending about... $2000 more than budget to rectify the fireplace issue. You just NEVER know what secrets a house is hiding. CONTINGENCY is key.

Yes, if renting it out, better to not have a fire hazard. My parents removed wood stoves from their rental property too, to avoid the fire hazard!

Skim coat 2 coats over cracks in panelling with drywall mud $7.00 for a large box.
Sand down and coat with primer, now paint and you have way less work than tearing out and resheetrocking, and not to mention cheaper and you can nail into wood much easier.
You skip the entire demo and sheetrocking steps so easy I have done it to 2 large pannelled walls.

What are those doors on the top left wall?

For those not up to stripping down to the studs, what about pickled paneling?

I did the same as Carissa. I bought wood filler and putty knife. After putting into groves, I sanded, applied kilz primer and painted. You could not tell the difference between what I did and if I had put up drywall. Just apply painters mesh tape between panels with compound because if you don't a crack will form there with temperature changes.

....and painting-over keeps the stuff out of a landfill!

Great makeover! The before is very similar to what I have and the after is very similar to what I want! But I am going to paint over too...so thanks for the tips on how to do it!

I didn't use mesh tape I just used wood filler. I did notice a slight crack between the panels after 1 year so that's why I thought of mesh tape with drywall compound. It's not hard to apply that. Don't forget to use kitz oil based primer before painting. I know I posted a before and after of that project somewhere on houzz if you search under my name maybe you will see it.

The panels were solid raw cedar. I didn't want to paint over them, so I kept the boards to make a cedar closet in my storage room!

Ginny Politz: they are the access for the electrics panel. I have a friend making a piece of art on a huge canvas to cover it!

blairehardison: the fireplace is really nice... I like it too! It is a Napolean ecowise. Uses about... $100 a year!

I also have some wonderful pieces to put on the wall by local First Nations artists...

I would have made that a Media room. Too small to do much else, but great for viewing the screen and for a good sound system. Put the TV over the fireplace (which I hope is also a heater.)

It's amazing how clutter really raises the stress level.
