They probably needed to settle and root. At what time of the year did you plant them? Yet, don't worry, they will bloom this year, and be stronger. but don't cut them back too much and wait until there is no danger of frost to do so. By the way, are they in full shade? If they are, it might also be the problem. They prefer a partially sunny location. Don't forget also to water them regularly when it's hot!

I think they should be just fine, although I'm not an expert at all. I simply love hydrangeas so much, that I have planted fifty eight, in our yard, over the last ten years, which helped me to learn what is good for each species. I noticed that the ones that thrived best are those planted by the house and that get the morning sun, like yours, or about three hours of late afternoon sun.

Is it very cold in winter in the part of Michigan where you live? What is your climate zone? In Vancouver, British Columbia, we are in Zone 8, with mild winters. As a result, hydrangeas never have to start from the ground, every spring. If you are in Zones 5 or 6, your plants might die back to ground level, each winter, but they will almost certainly bloom this year. However, I would suggest some fertilizer, in May, to help them. As for the color, the more acid your soil is, the bluer they will be.

I suspect you could. However, considering your climate, I would plant them in big planters, on a covered patio or a porch, in a shady area. ( North or North East facing), since they would dry out in the scorching sun, and heavy showers would also damage them.... Anyway, it's just a thought...I am not an expert, but it's worth a try.
