The floor, which turned out wonderfully, was a bit of a saga. I am trying to recreate the sequence of events. First of all it is 100% recycled, antique oak, 5-10" random width from Carlisle wide plank floors. We had them wire brush it for a more weathered texture.
Unfortunately, this left tiny particles of steel in the wood fiber which reacted with the original finish product, a Waco oil as I recall, and turned the floors lavender!! (Because we had used the same Waco oil on the un-wirebrushed oak ceiling boards and it looked beautiful, we had not anticipated that the wire brushing would have caused this dramatic reaction.) Fortunately, this was caught before all the flooring was coated. The contractor then experimented with samples of about twenty different products brushed on the actual flooring wood. We finally chose a Loba 2K, two part finish. Lobadur waterborne finish by Loba-Wakol LLC. www.loba.de. This gave us the soft, matte, slightly bleached look we were hoping for.

FYI, on another recent project, we tried to use a darker rubio finish on a similar oak flooring and the floor finisher was so frustrated with the way it pooled and created a dark streaky looking finish, that he gave up and used something completely different. I spoke to Rubio and they said it really needs to be applied by someone who is experienced with Rubio as it does have a very particular application method.
