Need Help with Furniture Arrangement /design my Narrow family room

We just bought our new house and we are in dilemma on how to arrange furnitures in our family room. It is an open concept plan and we have the family room wall facing the dinning room and Kitchen. We want paint the accent wall and put an contemporary entertainment unit . We want to put furnitures like Sofa, Chairs or love seats facing the TV. We dont want to cramp the place as it is long and narrow and putting a big furniture might create foot traffic. We want to put furnitures which will make the place spacious but at the same time is comfy to curl up and watch tv with family. We have the fire place in one corner of the room and a big window on the other side. While we want to use the whole space there , we do not want to block the light from the window as well. Can anyone please advise the best way to design our room. All your advices are appreciated!!

Please see attached pics.

WOW That is small. However, what I would suggest doing is getting an L shaped sectional couch with one part of the sectional across the window and the other section across from where you currently have the existing sofa. Then where the fireplace is place a chair on a swivel with ottoman so that you face the fireplace, or sectional. Also, I would turn the rug so that it is going in the opposite direction to which you currently have it. This will help to broaden the space rather than emphasize the narrowness. I would have a tendency to not include a wall-unit as it would take up too much of your valuable floor space. I would mount the TV above the fire place and have the receiver sit on the mantle preferably disguised by decorative elements. I know you didn't want to cover up the window but if you have the sectional positioned with the back to the dining area, you are still providing access to the view.

I understand what KMB is saying about turning the rug, However I would use 1 couch and 2 pairs of chairs, not a sectional. You will have more flexibility and openness. You could also use a long bench for seating that would not obstruct the view across or along the room.

Hi KMB, Thanks for your advice !! I was thinking of an IKEA TV wall unit... which does not occupy much space.. But you are right .. I must be extremely careful about the floor space.

I did not mention the dimesions I provided are in metric. Please see the imperial conversion below

    Family Room : 20 x 9.5
    Kitchen : 11.64 x 8.59
    Breakfast Area: 10.82 x 8.59

does this make any difference to the suggestion you provided earlier?

Hi flair lighting, thanks I want to put a tv in this place. Can u suggest some ideas for that as well

You don't have too many choices here. I think flair has the right idea with a chaise and a lamp just to the right of the fireplace so it becomes a cozy reading/resting nook.

The only real wall for the TV is the one opposite the dining room. I would use a long low TV console rather than a whole wall unit. A simple console will keep the open feel. Then I think the sofa needs to go on the window wall, with perhaps two small arm chairs facing the TV if they can be placed there without blocking traffic from the dining room.
