Should I Give This Large Ornate Table an Update?

Hey Houzz!

Just picked this awesome grand scale vintage coffee table up for $40 on craigslist! Wondering if I should give the base a new color or finish? I want a little more contrast since the rug and sofa are both beige, and the base of the table is old school speckled sand color. My color palette is yellows, greens, and black. So should I give it an update with black? Finish it with a darker wood color? Do something fun and crazy? Or leave it be and just decorate it? Give it to me straight! My style is eclectic dramatic modern!

Warner Decor, you are suggesting she put a table runner on a coffee table? Really??? Why don't you try giving appropriate advice that doesn't include always attempting to sell something?

Hi! I would first try a decorative table runner to see how it looks with the colors before painting it! Here are a few ideas:

What a DEAL! I'd leave it alone for a bit and see if you get used to it. In a couple/few months, if it still bothers you, I'd sand and re-stain.

I would like to see just the top of the table painted black with maybe a little brown distressing in the corners. A nice area rug underneath with all of your colors to anchor the space would also look nice.

Hi Anjelica, what a great find! If you like dramatic and eclectic, try adding a pop of color with the sofa fabric and a high gloss or metallic finish on the coffee table. You could also add a wall covering or fresh paint color to tie the room together.

nice find. I would suggest chalk paint in black and then rubbing some of the paint off in areas to show the detail.

Thanks everyone...

Not so sure about a table runner, that wouldn't fit into my lifestyle. This table gets a lot of use and I wouldn't want to worry about spilling or adjusting it. Already have a large area rug also, it's a 9x12 sisal rug from restoration hardware so definitely not replacing that.

My decor will eventually be simple, a tray and some books, a candle, a small storage box etc. I was just speaking more on the actual piece, just because the base really is quite old fashioned. Think, grandmas china cabinet. I'm really leaning towards painting the base black, unless anyone has some fun diy ideas! Let me know!

I would use black on the base only to give some break with the carpet, a really fun coffee table though.

Anjelica, I think you are correct to just paint the base black as the top looks in good condition (did you clean/touch up?). Love your green accents and painting over the sofa ... actually, love the entire room.
