The slate installed is California Gold 12x12. It does need to be sealed, however it should only need to be done every 1-2 years if a good quality sealer is used. Your sealer will also last alot longer if you aren't using harsh chemicals to clean the floor. The ph natural stone cleaner and hot water should be the only thing used to clean up any natural stone. If you love the look of slate, go for it! Nothing beats its natural characteristics.

When we showed our contractor a floor very similar to this, he mentioned that it was hard to keep clean and it needed to be sealed every 3 -6 months since it is a natural stone. ???? Love the look, not sure what to do? Don't know if his information is accurate or if others have put this type of flooring in and regretted it??

I put a 12X12 gray-green cleft slate floor in a hallway and downstairs bathroom several years ago. It was well sealed when installed. Other than vacuum/sweeping the labrador retriever hair, it has had zero maintenance. It looks great.

Cushman Design, Is tis really California Gold slate? Looks more like a gray slate, with quite a bit of clefting to me. Thank you for clarifying if you can,I love this look.

It's beautiful and I chose this slate for my laundry and a bathroom. They're installing now and I'm wondering what type of sealant you used. It still looks natural, not too shiny!
