How would you hang curtains on the windows? The window moulding is very prominent. Does anyone have a suggestion for artwork?

Thank you for everyone's input. Moved here 4 years ago and am trying to combine previous furniture ( French country) with transitional style. Agree it does need some softening. Do I need any tables or what would you suggest for floor lamp?

Well, hanging drapes there would be a trick, for sure. If not drapes, what if you reupholstered the two side chairs by the window in a color? That would bring a little more life to that side of the room.

i think it's very elegant. i dont think you should re-upholster. Maybe try a throw pillow if you feel you need more color.

Don't have a fabric suggestion, other than a very pale blue, maybe linen-like? Everything else is so neutral, you wouldn't need much.

Yes, I do have some ideas for you. I would go with a portrait orientation picture that is at least 24 x 36" so it's big enough to be easily seen. Since you like a more modern style, I would go with something without a frame. Here are some ideas for you. I've bought pictures from them before, and have been very happy with them. I framed mine so I don't know about buying the ones with the frame in them.

I like your chairs, but I do think your room needs some more color. Are you thinking of recovering the chairs? If so, go with your favorite color so when you look at the room, you feel happy.

Another easy way to bring some color into the room is with a vase of flowers such as sunflowers on the hearth.

Consider removing the art from the mantel and hanging it on that bare wall left of the FP and bookcase - center at 5' above the floor. I see a bit of gold in the painting that might translate well to that wall itself. You have pattern (lampshade, pillows) and texture (stone and rug) bur are missing a pop of color which the gold would give you. It would also work well with the blue or any of the other colors from the painting. Think about adding color via pillows, throw, lumbar pillows in the swoop chairs. Since TV is watched here you might see if there is room to place the swoop chairs side by side with their backs to the windows, not angled. Then see if the round table and chairs at the window would work by that newly painted gold wall as a game table. Anyone play chess, scrabble? A long bench under the windows would work well, and I don't think they need drapes - they are very good looking as they are! Once you feel comfortable with additional color, you might find a nice wallpaper that picks up some of it. Paper luan or foam core cutouts that will fit the backs of your shelves for both color and pattern. You might replace the shelves with glass ones for an update too.

Anything I'd find to say about this room would be nitpicking, it's already awesome! An unexpected color or object would be good. Maybe paint the shelves or part of the ceiling...

The room is already very well done, but could use a little tweaking. Thanks for moving the furniture. That looks great and is more functional. More recommendations:

1) Remove the lamps from beside the chairs. Place 2 lamps on either side of the couch. I don't know if you have anything matching. They don't have to be. But, the two heights should be the same. For example, it could be that table and lamp you have now on one side and a floor lamp on the other that is approximately the same height.

2) Remove the art from the fireplace. It does not work with the brick on the fireplace and it cannot be hung. Choose something that honors the color of the brick and has a larger pattern so as not to conflict with the small stone pattern. Below selections are originals from Etsy.com

3) After art is chose, bookcases can be rearranged. Collection of vases and books. Vases you have can be spray-painted one color.

4) Pillows on chairs to accent chosen art above fireplace. Don't need to recover.

Your home is very lovely but I thought your first layout was the best (bsil). Painting the bookcases grey would really help tie them in with the fireplace. My suggestion would be taking down the painting on the mantle and trying some vases there, say 2 on one side and one on the other - different heights and shapes. The aqua blue from your art glass piece would look great. Then maybe get a couple of throw pillows in the same color. I like the way you have styled the bookcases. Then the art from the FP would look wonderful on the wall behind the chairs. If you want more color on the other side of the room, you could look into doing roman shades on your windows and add a long console table in front of the window with some upholstered stools underneath. You could add photos, flowers etc to the console table. The straight back chairs and round table look like an afterthought and don't really work imho!

Here are a couple of ideas of what your fireplace could look like. You could also consider leaving the bookcases the same, but painting the backs of them grey. You can experiment and see if you like this by using wallpaper to back them.

I am in the process of making some changes that you have suggested. The tv does not need to stay because it the only time it is used is sometimes from the kitchen. Does any one have any ideas with the table and chairs by the window? That was indeed an afterthought! The console with upholstered stools is appealing. Any thoughts? The art behind the chair seems to make that side of the room. This is one console. Any thoughts?

As far as table and chairs, always think "function". Reason table and chairs don't work is because they are indeed an after thought.

I think having nothing there is fine. Otherwise ideas are A long ottoman where you could sit by the window/ a table and chairs set up to play games.

We have a media/game room that we use and that was the placement of that table and chairs. Just have about 6' from chair to windows and it seems as if something should be there.

Some orange color based pillows and decorative elements (like vessels) would really pull it all together, it looks great already!

Could the chairs be turned so they are under the table and set it up like a coffee/breakfast/happy hour area for you?

Try placing the chairs facing each other and place as chess board (one idea) on it.

I actually can see why you have them. They don't take much space, give you a little spot for a personally pleasing and changeable vignette, and provide extra seating with a spot for a glass of wine when you have guests. What if you scootched your snake plant (by the shelves) over into that grouping?

Actually there is 6' from chair and 9' from end of sofa. A wide space so it does seem empty. Thought also about chair and chest but not sure what would work best. The chairs that are with the table have a fabric that does not work at all.

Does anyone think the console table she likes would look good there? She really doesn't like the table and chairs there. The table and chairs belong in the media room for games. She just feels like there needs to be something on that side of the space to be balanced from the other side. And she would like a new floor lamp like like the one attached and another lamp for the koi table next to the chairs. They do use the chairs and lamps are essential for reading. Someone suggested a statement piece. What would that be? Mom is really trying to make this room feel finished and she has done a great job but feels there is just something missing.

What is the view like? One idea would be a long, counterweight table along the wall, backless stools underneath. It sounds like someone suggested that earlier. I missed that.

When you have people over, it could double as extra dining seating or a buffet or place to set appetizers.

Console table. How wide is the console table and how wide is the set of windows?

A long narrow console table would be perfect with some ottomans or stools for extra seating underneath. Can you find one that mimics the look of your cute end table (by the upholstered chairs)? Or the one in the ocean view photo would work well. You said the art behind the chairs was too heavy? Darn! I was hoping it would work there. The wall space seemed kind of empty without something there.

If I were to get an end table should it be rectangle? Should the tables be mixed for instance not all round or all square? And also what style of lamps and how tall should they be? Would the floor lamp that I posted work in the room, style and or size?

Lamps are needed by the chairs because they read there. She is really concerned with the space by the windows. The windows are more than 12' across. She loves the idea of a long low ottoman but cannot have anything too low there as it is a walkway. How long would the console table have to be to be proportionate to the windows? Thanks again everyone for your help. To humor me, she had dad remove the table and chairs and she feels like it is way to empty without something.

She thinks the art is too heavy because there is nothing to balance it on the window wall (and a receptacle) would have to be moved. A piece of art that is no more than 30" would work better.

I would say a console table about as long as the couch. It is hard to find long ones. My suggestion for the windows was some roman shades that would tie into the colors in the sitting area. I really like the floor lamp already in the room. The table lamp is nice also. A square table that is somewhat similar to the existing end table would be good to mix things up a little. Check artwork on etsy. There are some wonderful things for not too much $$. They list the sizes. For example, check karenfaulknerart for some really nice small watercolors.

What about something like an interesting long wood bench with upholstered seat, and a back in a rather open design?

I would move everything back from the fireplace a little, including the rug so there is a border of hard wood entirely around the rug. Then center the sofa and the chairs on either side of the rug. Beyond that, looks pretty good.

It's a little difficult to see the spacing in the picture, if there is room, and you really want to add something, you could put the sofa facing the fireplace, leave the chairs where they are and add a love seat or chaise opposite the chairs. May not be room though.

Lamps: I think you need ones that balance each other. Either 2 table lamps by chairs or 2 floor lamps.

3 round tables is not an issue. I do not feel there is a need to put anything on the window wall. Every piece of space does not have to be filled.

My windows have a trim at top of window that protrudes about 4". Are there any rods available to hang panels? There is a pic in my previous post.

For the door and window in the kitchen......the door looks to be challenging because it butts up against a wall. I would have a local drapery maker take a look. Options for the kitchen windows are

-attempt to do a valance in the same fabric with the kitchen door and window
-valance for window only
-drapes for window only

It's a personal thing, but I don't care for drapes on short rods. You know you can't pull them.

Yes, short rods seems to be a very polarizing topic. No reason why you couldn't also go with traditional rods. The only issue is the rod would have to be extended more than normal and peanut might not like the look of a long rod across extended more than usual.

For this application, I would definitely hire a local window treatment specialist who can explain to you the various options, as well as the plusses and minuses of different applications.
