porch ceiling paint

I live in Florida and we built a porch and gazebo on to the front of our house. The porch ceiling is wood. I went to Home Depot and explained to the "expert" in the paint department exactly what I wanted to do with the ceiling. He told me that they sold a special Porch paint that was made especially for ceilings. We applied Kilz and several coats of primer before applying the blue ceiling paint and all the knots in the wood bled through. We have since applied 3 more coats of the blue porch paint and it still bleeds through and there is now black mold appearing on my porch ceiling. Was a special type of ceiling paint used for this porch or was it some type of Azak material?

The porch paint from Home Depot is for the floor and not intended to be applied to the ceiling.

A GREAT porch paint that we've used on our porches is Rustoleum, "battleship gray". It's true oil based enamel and is great for porches. the color is very similar to the paint shown in this picture.

I only ever use Benjamin Moore -- and if you buy the highest quality paints, you'll actually save money. No need to buy primer and it often takes one coat. And they back up their paints. Saves time, money and irritation. We just repainted our cottage (it hadn't been painted for 40 years by the previous owners) and one coat of the Ben Moore outdoor paint -- highest quality version -- did the job. We touched up a couple rough spots and that was it. I've been designing for 20 years and I learned one thing for sure: never, ever skimp on paint quality.

What color in Benjamin Moore outdoor porch floor paint would you recommend?

The problem isn’t the paint. It’s the wood that was used. Clear pine is more expensive. But no knots. Knots will bleed for yrs- they have to be polyurethaned then Kilz- but still can bleed. No paint can hold back pine tar.
