Hi and thanks for the question. It depends on your floor system - when installing a floating floor system (Pergo laminate, locking cork panels, etc.), we install a plastic vapor barrier. We typically don't place a barrier when installing tile, glued engineered wood, or carpet. If there is excessive vapor coming through the slab (determined by using a concrete moisture meter), there are roll-on vapor retarders available that can be used. Hope this helps.

Confused here a bit. What does vapor have to do with protecting the floor from water damage if there's a flood? Also, the other question was regarding radiant heating, but was not addressed. Will the vapor barrier protect a newly installed flooring system and/or carpeting should there be a flood and since the remodel is a basement, is radiant heat necessary? Thanks.

A vapor barrier (more accurately referred to as a vapor retarder) only provides protection from moisture that will naturally permeate the concrete floor and will not prevent floor damage. The floors in this basement do not have radiant heat. Basement floors do not necessitate radiant heat; it's just an "upgrade" that homeowners may consider.
